Don't get me wrong; I actually really like this movie, but I think I er why it was so poorly received. I remember the TV ads and it was presented as this lighthearted family comedy about a strict grandmother setting her granddaughter straight. As we all know, it turned out to have some very intense subject matter, and some people do NOT appreciate being blindsided like that. This and the LL drama surrounding the film gave it a bad rep. It's too bad really how sometimes trailers can destroy a film like that. For instance, I got my roommate to watch a trailer for mulholland drive in hopes it would make him want to see it, and the trailer made the movie look like absolute garbage. If I were a filmmaker, I would have to be heavily involved in creating the trailers.

I agree.
It is not a comedy movie.
But it's the same with Family Stone.
The movie is presented as a comedy. Yes, it has it's few funny scenes but it also very sad.

Maybe producers think, their movies will be promoted better when it's titled with comedy?
