my theory about the (SPOILERS)

theory about the ghost. Sometimes it seemed good, sometimes it seemed evil. Maybe it was supposed to be the mom's ghost when it was warm and loving, but maybe it wasn't really a ghost at all, when it tried to kill the little girl. The little girl had serious guilt issues, obviously, so maybe she was imagining the ghost at those times. If that's right, then, at those times, the "ghost" was sort of an embodiment of her self-hatred... pardon the psychobabble.

I don't think I even believe in ghosts, so, this whole post is a little ridiculous, but, I'm just trying to speculate about what the movie makers meant for us to think.

You are toast, my toasty friend.

I think it was her guilt. There wasn't really a ghost. At first it was a comforting sort of memory of her mother and their interaction. Eventually her guilt in being the cause of her mother's death, and her saying she wanted to be with her mother, it is her self-conscience luring her to cross that busy street.

I think it was her guilt.
Probably that more than anything. Unfortunately there was no real atmosphere engendered by the appearances (perhaps the final one was a little different) and IMO it was one of a number of narrative threads that just didn't really go any where interesting.🐭

I agree, she's not meant to be an actual ghost. The girl conjures up images of her mother to find comfort and forgiveness. As the story goes on, the girl ends up following the mother who keeps walking further and further away. On one level the girl feels her mother slowly fading away, which makes her all the more anxious to not get left behind.

I had a different take on it. Whether or not the mother's ghost was real doesn't matter, although many people do see and/or hear their loved ones after a death. Undoubtedly more would admit to these experiences if they didn't fear being ridiculed, disbelieved, or at worse, thought crazy. Probably many fear they're crazy too.

I don't see the ghost as being evil. I saw her leading the little girl into traffic because it resulted in the older daughter forgiving her, and re-bonded all three of them at the end, so healing could take place.

Whether it was a ghost, or a manifestation in her mind of the little girl's grief and guilt doesn't matter.
