i have enjoyed what i have seen of this show (the first 4 episodes) and i also like other animes such as cowboy bebop. what are some other good anime that have a good story behind them without becoming "childish". i suppose you could say that i like the darker atmosphere of the anime genre. i liked hellsing except it sometimes turned into a "yugi-oh-ish" game with hellsing competing against other vampires and just seemed to have more power/ability available whenever he needed it. i can't stand that. anyways, any suggestions here would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
Recommendation threads tend to get messy. But I guess that's not going to stop me from posting. ^^
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - This is probably the series that has the most in common with Ergo. It's definately for a more grown-up audience.
Samurai Champloo - By the creators of Bebop, a fun, well put together series.
Death Note - It's still airing in Japan, and is only a dozen episodes in or so, but you might like it. The premise is interesting.
Fullmetal Alchemist - My favourite series, and probably the best anime out there at the moment. It's very well put together with some fascinating characters and more mature themes.
Kino No Tabi - (Kino's Travels) - A very philosophical series, and very short to boot. Each episode is a one-off, and some of them will leave you speachless.
Gungrave - Another fun show with great character developement from the creator of Trigun.
Mushishi - A very laid back, quiet anime for adults. It deals with the fantastical, and is awe-inspiring to watch.
Wolf's Rain - Another personal favourite. This show has some great plot twists, and is similar to Ergo in that it takes places in some sort of post-apocalyptic society.
I could probably go on, but I'll digress.
Anime News Network is great for any anime questions. They have a section here that allows you to view the highest rated shows. I go through here from time to time looking for something new.
One of my favorite all time anime series is Serial Experiements:Lain. From the little Im reading about Ergo Proxy, it seems like there maybe some similarities. Is this a a pretty fair assumption?
"Chance is a kind of religion where you're damned for plain bad luck."
not quite the same cup of tea. lain deals with the psychic a lot more than ergo proxy does. still, e.p. is a great anime, from the story to the gfx. you might wanna get Texhnolyze, too. and Jigoku Shoujo.
"Trinity Blood" is a promising anime. I haven't seen all of the series, but what I have seen is good. The opening for it is rather bland, but it's listenable. The animation is really good, the characters are cool, the setting is interesting, and the music in the show is pretty good. You should give it a try. The only thing I didn't like is that it's not as dark as I would prefer.
PLANETES!!! That's a great anime... mostly because it portrays space pretty realistic. it's got that space shuttle feel, not flying saucer feel. planetes also deals with themes of existentialism, idealism, and pragmatism.
As far as it being similar to ergo proxy... it isn't. Ergo is descartes and the consciousness. Planetes is kierkegaard with a dash of sociology. Planetes is a pretty mature anime... but it does have it's fun every once in a while.
I dunno, i saw planetes, and since it's my second favorite anime of all time, i had to just say stuff about it :P
You saw half an ep of Trinity Blood? I gave up watching the 1st episode, but then again I've seen alot of animes and Trinity blood was suppose to be for adult audience and like many animes they don't start of good at 1st episode, then i continued to watch a few episodes of Trinity Blood and I WANT A *beep* SEQUEL! EPIC ANIME and Awesome Concept of an anime!
I can't believe people have gone so far as to mention Fullmetal Alchemist but have neglected to mention Eureka 7. Hell, it's even written by the same guy who wrote Ergo Proxy. It's another incredibly pscyhological show that most definitely has a dark side, despite the relatively bright colors when compared to something like Ergo Proxy. It looks like a kid's show at first but manages to hold its own for a good (albeit short) 50 episodes. I'd reccomend it to any fan of this series or Satou Dai in general. He also wrote a decent chunk of the Ghost in the Shell series which is very similar in style, but that's already been mentioned.
Good luck in finding something you like, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the show as the series progresses - episode 4 hasn't even scratched the surface.

Based on your tastes I'd have to say you'd probably like:
Akira (Another dystopian-themed anime) Witch Hunter Robin (The mood and style are very similar to Ergo Proxy) Death Note (Very dark, weird, and thoughtful) Gankutsuou Le Chevalier D'eon Wolf's Rain Samurai Champloo Cowboy Bebop Serial Experiments Lain Fullmetal Alchemist (Starts poorly, but gets really good a little less than halfway through the series) Eureka Seven (As with Fullmetal Alchemist, the first few episodes aren't all that great, but it gets good later) Loveless (if you don't mind boy/boy couples) Berserk (though be warned it's a bit gory) Elfen Lied (Also not for the faint of heart) Neon Genesis Evangelion
And should probably avoid: (Basically all of the following anime may seem silly or childish to someone new to anime, but some of them are worth a try once you've gotten used to the style)
Outlaw Star Yu Yu Hakusho D. Gray Man Black Cat Fruits Basket Trigun Hellsing Ultimate (If you didn't like the original series, you're going to like Hellsing Ultimate even less)
hey, here are some anime movies that i would highly recommend:
memories tombstone of fireflies metropolis vampire hunter d: bloodlust blood: the last vampire paprika royal space force millenium actress tokyo godfathers akira pompoko jin roh
Definitly Elfen Lied, you can find it on TV Links, as long as you don't mind anime nudity. It's got a great story line, it's adorable and...you'll fall in love with it after the first episode :)
Elfen Lied is great but the story makes you depressed. Gungrave also maintains a series tone throughout the entire series, the first episode seems generic scifi-tech anime but get past that and the second episode starts like 40-50 years before and takes most of the series to work back up to where episode 1 started. Spectacular as it takes you from a realistic society then slowly to zombie like warriors and stuff.
