Dark, Gothic, atmospheric...and incredibly dull and slow moving.

The husband has the personality of a water-melon seed and is so dull I'm not surprised that the wife was alienated. Actually...the wife isn't much better: morose, negative and quite a downer. The only semi-likeable characters are the sister, and then the sister's friend who shows up. The ending is a total mess and takes a sharp hair-pin turn from where most of the film was leading to. The short-story this was based on is irrelevant to me since I didn't read it; my reaction is based strictly on the movie. I wanted to turn this off half-way through and I should have; I hate bailing early on a movie I've started but someday I really need to learn to cut my losses. I can never get this time back.
