Wendy Wu is a fun piece of lightweight camp!
I was watching Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior on a DVD rental yesterday and I enjoyed every minute of it! It was well made considering it was a TV movie shot in New Zealand on a tight budget of $6 million. Brenda Song was so thin and skinny when she was a child. Who would've know she'd grow into a sensual adult with some really nice curves?! Song's also a solid actress and her comic timing is superb. Wendy Wu did "echo" Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but imitation is the highest form of flattery! The filmmakers also did a nice job of adding a human side to Wendy's Chinese-American family. Wendy's father wants to get in touch with his Chinese roots after meeting Shen.
Tsai Chin plays Wendy's grandmother in the film. She made a brief appearance in not one...but two 007 films: You Only Live Twice(1967) and Casino Royale(2006).
Shin Koyamada was really good as Shen. He gave a sincere performance, but he knew the film had a sense of fun. I like the scene where Shen meditates on a moving van and a bug splatters on his forehead! LOL! Was he really in The Last Samurai(2003)?
The "special" effects were cheesy, but they got the job done. Koichi Sakamoto and Alpha Stunts("Drive") did a good job staging the action scenes...and this is a family movie!
When I have the disposable income, I am going top buy this on DVD.
