Adam

How come as the show progressed the writers made him so stupid he wasn't like it at first but then suddenly he became stupid.

reply

Actually from the very first episode there were signs of his stupidity.

He wasn't THAT stupid in the first two seasons. I've been binging the series, and am on season 5, and he has pretty much lost brain function at this point . At first Adam and Jen actually came across like a couple who could have a conversation, and deal with problems that engaged couples deal with, but by season 3, he can't say a sentence without having a problem understanding what someone says. I think he's funny either way, but the writers definitely made him dumber as the series progressed.

I've been binge watching the show for the past month and they definitely ramped up Adam's stupidity in the last seasons. I liked him much more in the earlier episodes when he was slightly ditsy but still realistic. They turned him into Homer Simpson where he can't understand the simplest thing anymore and it really detracts from any realism there might be.

The same thing happened years ago on the Bob Newhart Show with Howard Borden. They turned his character from a loveable scatterbrain into a cartoonish caricature barely able to feed or clothe himself.

I've gotten to the point with Adam where I dread his scenes because I know they're going to be silly and cringe-worthy. It was as if he got hit over the head at some point and suffered severe head trauma and now can barely function as an adult human being.

I think they wanted to make him in the mold of a "Joey Tribbiani", but with a girlfriend/almost wife.

reply

To be fair, Joey wasn't stupid in the first season of friends, a little in the second season, and he became dumber as the show progressed. Same with Adam, he was pretty normal in S01, S02.

reply

I agree, Joey was portrayed as a street smart, not so rich working actor who knew a lot about picking up women. Making him less smart made him more humorous, but they balanced that out by giving him that signature pick-up line "How you doing". Making Adam more gullible made him more interesting and humorous.

Lots of shows do that like Joey, Homer Simpson...cant think of more at the moment

Mark (Glenn Quinn) from Roseanne.

Oh, I do not care. This is Oliver Hudson. He can be dumb as a stump if he wants. He is forgiven.

reply

They really did gradually make his character cartoonish..... Come on! The day of his wedding he is concerned about what his pet bird will wear?

Instead of the total stupidity, they should have stuck with his so called superiority. I found that funny. He was a cross country runner in high school. He was an expert! Right! He loaded up on his carbs the very morning of a marathon. He knew about hiking and nature! When it came to hiking in the woods to look at the leaves he was an expert! Right! He wound up with poison ivy all over him and he needed help in unzipping his pants to go pee!
I know people like that. They seem to think they are experts when they know nothing!

A lot of shows use a stupid character for humor. Look at Cheers and Friends.

reply

I don't know but he stayed being the funniest character throughout the entirety of the show. I can't think of any off the top, but I do seem to remember that he had a lot of "clever" misunderstandings. Clever on the writer's part.
