greatest trumpet player of all time

Story is waaaay overdue

Well, if things like "consistently playing in tune" and "tone that doesn't wobble" and so on matter to you, no he isn't. Hell, Roy Hargrove and Freddie Hubbard could play circles around Miles. Miles was a great bandleader and knew how to fit players together, that's what his legacy will be.

Even Hubbard himself will tell you Miles is a "one of a kind" Miles had distinctive sound that any casual jazz fan would recognize. His subtle way of hitting notes without any effort separates him from the rest. Miles sound will never ever be replicated. That's how I determine greatness. ...

You a trumpet player? Wynton Marsalis's
Hayden and Purcell (sp on both) show him
To be a better trumpet player than Miiles,
Freddy, and most cats in any genre. But, Wynton and everybody but Louis Armstrong
have to take a seat down from Miles as artist.

BTW: beats me how so many people say Miles's technique was flawed, that his
tuning went flat, how he lacked power and range. I think maybe they just either haven't heard enough of his canon or
they don't have a deep understanding of his "social music" or the nuances of trumpet playing.

________ are to tones as numerals are to numbers.

Miles forever! The best ever! I'm so fortunate that I was able to see him at the Monterey Jazz festival a looooooong time ago, even though he walked off the stage half way through his performance because the audience wouldn't calm down and shut up. I was so pissed.

What are your criteria for a good trumpet player?

Personally I think saying "Miles Davis the best trumpet player" is kinda like saying "Beethoven was the best piano player". Yes, Miles Davis played his instrument well. But that is hardly the most important part of his legacy.

Which was??? Seriously. .
