Does anyone know what his stomach pains were (in a medical diagnosis)

were they just like intense ulcers? or.... what?
any help would be appreciated.

reply

I am not really sure but my guess would also be some sort of intense stomach ulcers. Probably due to the poor diet he's been on after he graduated from high school. In case of an ulcer, the treatment is a really strict diet with absolutely no alcohol and etc... He obviously didn't stick to any sort of diet, which probably made the ulcer even worse..

I've always wondered if he had celiac (a gluten intolerance). My brother has one, and many people go undiagnosed. Some of his symptoms fit well with a grain allergy.

Pnin, I have celiac disease and ulcerative colitis, and based on what I've read from Cobain, it sounds more like colitis to me.

If I remember correctly (I can't provide any sources) it possibly had something to do with his spine being out of alignment and it sort of caused his digestive tract to be out of alignment. That probably doesn't make much sense, but its sort of like his spine was poking into the area of his GI tract and causing the pain.

I've never heard an exact reason for his chronic stomach pain and I don't think it was ever officially diagnosed. I remember in one interview he mentioned he went to a doctor for help with it and was given a medication and he said it worked great, until later he looked it up and found out it was just another opiate.

Opiates greatly reduce stomach pain, and in the past were given out as cures for dysentery and other stomach ailments, which is why he took heroin for his stomach problem. In fact, Immodium AD (loperamide), a common anti-diarrhea treatment, is a type of opiate that doesn't cross the blood brain barrier and so it treats the symptoms of diarrhea without attaching to the endorphin receptors in the brain.

But, if I had to give an educated guess, I would probably guess he had Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which is a combination of psychological and psychological symptoms that result in a very painful GI disorder. When I was looking up this disorder, I found a quote from LEF (Life Extension Foundation) that said the following:

Research has suggested that IBS patients have extra sensitive pain receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, which may be related to an abnormal level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating digestion and mood. Their level of serotonin may help explain why people with IBS are likely to be anxious or depressed (Kasper DL et al 2005).

Other possible conditions could be Colitis or Crohn's Disease, GERD, or a combination of those, and as mentioned that, combined with a poor diet, extreme stress and anxiety, & alcohol/drug/nicotine/caffeine (ab)use would make it worse.

they know what it was he has a pinched nerve lol

I think it was Chron's disease.

From everything I've read about Kurt Cobain (quite a lot), I've come to the conclusion that there's a good chance it was Crohn's Disease. This especially rang true, when he said that he went to countless doctors, but they couldn't find out what was wrong with him. From my understanding, Crohn's Disease can be very hard to diagnose sometimes, especially when there's other complications (Cobain was a heroin user).

There was a case a while back, where a young teen had extremely similar symptoms to that of Cobain and just like Cobain, none of the doctors she saw were able to give here a reliable diagnosis. After doing something for a science lab/project, she self-diagnosed herself with a microscope. It's quite an amazing story.

About 5 years ago I read a little blurb in a a New York paper saying that because Cobain was underweight and with scholiosis, it resulted in him having a pinched nerve somewhere in that abdominal area. The article said that anorexic females frequently experience this type of pain he talked about.

I'm pretty sure it says in CAYA that the doctors thought it was a pinched nerve but found no evidence of it.

One doctor suggested it could be an uncommon side effect of taking Ritalin as a child.

Personally I don't know, nor do I really care at this point. I'm not even 100% convinced it even existed.

Yeah, I heard that he might not have anything wrong w/ him physically.

Coulda been a serious case of IBS. I have it pretty bad and have literally passed out from the pain more than once. Having been on opiods (OxyContin) for a back injury, I also know that they helped my stomach issue quite a bit (Opiods harden the stool, and my stomach problems usually caused it to do the exact opposite) so it would make sense that heroin was one of the few things out there that would make you feel better. That being said, its a completely illegitimate reason to do heroin, if opiods helped he could have started at codeine or percocet and even then its still a poor reason to start using painkillers. THAT being said, I understand the desperation he must have been in, because he had been to countless doctors and came up empty handed. Had that problem with my back. Very, VERY stressful.

Just my theory.

I have always said that my ulcer has made me want to shoot myself (but I wouldn't!). Ulcers are NO JOKE.
I know many people with chronic pain, and you really have to will yourself to live most days.

I know what it was...a means to justify his heroin use.
