5 against 1 / 3 against 1

So when he has that fight ane bad guy says

"5 against 1"

he says

"3 against 1"

"how do you work that out"

"well i hit you, then two run blah blah"

I'm sure I've seen this exact scene in another film

Anyone else?

What film was it?

reply

It's a standard gimmick in movies wherein the hero, in this case pocket-sized Tom Cruise of Scientology fame, throws out some clever quips to show how at ease he is in the face of almost certain anihilation.

As a physical coward, I enjoy these types of scenes. I'll probably say something similar if ever faced with a 5 on 1 beating. It'll either sound convincing enough that they'll back down or, more likely, they'll be some damned gutsy, but very ironically wrong, last words.

reply

Thanks for the laugh. I'm afraid it'll be the latter but I will give you credit for going down with style.

reply

If you can't go out in style with a nice smart@$$ quip, why go out at all?

reply

In reality the only thing that can help in a situation like that is if you have a knife or gun or some other weapon already on you. Soon as they see that (if they dont also have anything on them), most will back down. Its just too risky. If you have nothing, instead of trying to run at them or take them on directly, hopefully you can quickly run to something near you which you can grab and use as a weapon. A steel pipe off a wall, a heavy branch, hopefully something usable will be near.

I think you're right..but can't remember, but it also reminds me of one of the scenes (also Tom Cruise) in The Last Samurai.

reply

I don't remember hearing it elsewhere but wouldn't be surprised. It does sound a bit familiar. Also, at one point Reacher says to one of the bad guys "I've got nothin' better to do". Harrison Ford says the same line in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!
