INSANE Love

Spoilers.

I think everyone knows the story that the guy falls in love with the girl. She leaves him. He goes insane and hires someone to throw lye in her face blinding her for life. He gets convicted, goes to jail and then somehow convinces her that he loves her in spite of all this and proposes and she accepts.

Very entertaining movie. Hard to believe this happened, not so much what he did to her, but the fact that she went back to him. That is beyond insane. The only explanation I can think of was that he took away her most valueable assett, her beauty, and without that he severly limited her options of ever getting married or having someone to love and care for her. She knew this and as she got older probably feared being alone and having no one to take care of her. In the end he got what he wanted.

You have to see this to believe it, but honestly this whole story is f'd up. The fact that she allows this monster near her is sickening. Maybe he wore her down so much that he eventually convinced her that he loved her and she believed it.

Why do people fall in love with people who abuse them? What IS it about human nature that causes a person to give their life to someone who harms them phsysically or emotionally?

I think a lot has to do with upbringing and childhood, and also low self-esteem. Those formative years are very important. If something traumatic happens during those years, it can mess up someone for life. Very sad.

It could very well have backfired on him. I used to live in the house that belonged to Patricia Worrell; she was the victim in exactly the same circumstances... except when the men came to the door to throw the lye in her face, her "boyfriend" grabbed her arms behind her, and she screamed.... when she screamed, the lye went down her throat. She didn't die right away, but the lye ate through her esophagus and killed her a few days later. Her unfortunate situation happened back in the late 70's if I remember correctly, in Sylmar, CA.
