Why the anti-American slant?

I'm watching the show on ION and was struck by the Anti-American sentiments.

The first occured when the Commissioner was told that the Americans had agreed to send 10 Chinook helicopters. She asked why is it was taking so long and the lack of comment that followed as well as the expression on the other actor's face was pretty revealing.

The question I have is that given the number of citizens that needed to be evacuated and the need for resources.. Why didn't COBRA contact the US military at the offset as well as any other military resources? So now it's America's fault that the civilian authority screwed up?

The other came when the Deputy was talking with the head of the US financial markets(?). Given the severity of the currency markets problems I doubt the two would be talking to each other and if even if they were, the US isn't going to kiss of their strongest ally with a 'you're on your own' attitude.

omg so am i! except it started 6 minutes ago on ION.

I just watched it on ION as well and thought it was one of the better movies of it's kind.

reply

It's fashionable to be Anti-American right now. Just ignore it.

reply

It's anti-American because it was made in the UK. If the flick was made in the US, it would be anti somebody else. Or anti everybody else, because we like to do things on our own.

Somebody's always gotta be the bad guy.

reply

This film was made in South Africa, not the UK. And it is not anti-American. Why are some Yanks so sensitive about perceived slights? The examples that you give cannot be seen as anti-American. Perhaps - at most - it is the characters expressing frustration at token American assistance. If you want to believe that the rest of the world hates you, and act accordingly, this will turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The financial meltdown subplot was sort of out of nowhere. Like so much else in this mess of a movie, It did not advance the plot at all. And central banks like the Fed and Bank of England usually help each other out in a crisis. Not very realistic.

reply

The slant did appear in the Richard Doyle book as well when the US President was thinking of saving his own economy by cutting the UK loose as the disaster struck, even though US military personnel and those of other nations all rallied together to help those trapped in London. This financial meltdown subplot was one of the few moments from the book that was integrated into the movie.

But it was a welcome change to see a disaster movie set in the UK and it worked for me to see London wiped out as opposed to New York or LA which happens too many times!!

Why the anti-American slant ....... err, why not?!

Hollywood has portrayed us Brits as villains and evil wrong-doers in enough films.

Bit different when the yanks get a kick up the arse eh?!

i know!! .. you know what really annoys me .. the adverts for the american version of the office .. on the advert it says 'like your office, only funnier' .. no its not!! .. if it was funnier why couldn't the writers write original scripts instead of copyong the script word for word of the endlish version ..

anyway, im glad there was no americans in it .. coz now britain has another film of its own .. dunno why .. but i would just love to see some big british flick really big in america right now (coz of the writers strike) .. so the americans could see that britain can make good films!! ..

woo .. check me out gettin all argumentitive!!

I agree, why not?

Great British cast in this film, although its more a docudrama than a film...

And the yanks really need a big kick up the arse, then maybe they will realize they are not the lords of this world.

reply

why? oh my.. oh why? well.. i might be subjective on this subject but in the last years I really don't find excuses for US as before. And i was one of their biggest supporters. Now..
If indeed global warming is real inspite of what US officials tell, could we do something about it?
Wasn't US the biggest opponent of Kyoto protocol? Or not rattified means we're ok with it when all the rest do it and we stand alone?
If something goes wrong with the climate.. Would US gov accept it's mistakes or be the saviors of the universe as ever?
There are so many US movies in which all aothers are depicted as villans and they save the day? Why others are bad when America is not as pure as they want us top believe it?

as an ending to all this. US talks about freedom of speech. That's ok untill u talk bad about US? If ur trying to argue.. u be right... until i remember of Afganistan. And the lack of heroine untill they freed it? Now it's back and giving 95% of the worlds heroine?
err.. i love individuals. never the group.

damn.. i just finished seeing the movie..
sorry.. anti american? ur paranoid? if u think it has anything anti american.. then u might consider it's people like u that make other anti american.
just stay in ur conquered country and leave the rest alone. don't go exporting ur so called democracy elsewhere. [almost 5 am and drunk... also pissed off]

reply

yes i agree. i hardly see much of a anti-american slant at all.

reply

I didn't see any Anti-American slant at all to be honest. The comment about American helicopters I didn't even hear (which scene was that mentioned in?) and I took no notice of the short exchange between the Deputy PM and the American guy when they were dicussing the economy. To be honest I thought that scene was a really bad idea and distracted you away from the plot and really spoilt the pacing and flow of the film.

I don't see why the British Government would expect American military helicopters to help them. By my reckoning the closest US forces would be in Germany? So they'd be of no help at all.

I don't know why the British Army were bitching about their lack of helicopters, the Army Air Corps has plenty. Plus they'd be able to ask the RAF for helicopters too (actually if anyone was doing any Air Rescuing it'd be the RAF seeing as they do most Search & Rescue stuff), also you can factor in available Coast Guard heli's and any Air Ambulance's. So it's not like there's a shortage of helicopters in the UK for them to ask for help.

reply

Their are a few US Airforce bases in the UK. I don't know if any have helicopters but I'd expect every airforce base to have helicopters.

reply

yeahhhhhhh, me too. And if it was....why is anyone asking why? Who should it be in this case?

reply

I would say the reason they would take long is because of the atlantic ocean

HUZZAR!

reply

There are American Air force bases in England by the way...not that im defending this piece of crap film. Its so poor and ends before you find out if the proffs plan worked or not!

Wank

reply

THEY PROBABLY DIDNT CALL IN THE US MILITARY COS THEY WOULD OF SHOT EVERYONE THINKING THEY WERE IRAQIS OR AFGHANS,PS THIS WAS BAD

reply

I see what you mean about it being anti-American, its because the Americans didn't fly in at the last second and save everyone.
I guess your one of these people who believe they/America were the only reason the Germans were defeated in World War 2, even though any expert will tell you the main reason Germany lost is because they got crippled in the Battle of Britain when many Brits lost their lifes along with a large number of Polish people, not many Americans took part and yet we still won.

And I don't even need to talk about the large number of Brits killed in Friendly fire from attacks by the Americans at the moment.

I'm not sure why you even need to bring up this hole arguement for? This is a fiction film set in England, not in America, the film is not real it hasn't happened and if you watched the film you'd of seen the storm hit america first so the Americans had their own problems to sort out.
