OK, nevermind that I came in near the end of this movie. What I'm confused about is the scene where a group of adults are dancing and singing, and coming to the school. Some of the children go and lock the gates, and then begin throwing things when the adults reach the gates. WHY did they do this? Who were the adults, and what were they trying to do that caused the children to throw things at them?

I don't understand why they did this.

The adults dancing were welcoming a new twacher that was going to replace their teacher, the one who had also taken a liking to the adult kindergartener. They locked the adults out because they were angry that their beloved teacher had been fired and replaced.
