the United Kingdom (Britain) is not really a European country. I know of my ancestor's homeland (am of Scottish descent here) of the UK, and no real Britons consider themself truely European
I know what you mean because Britons always like to distinguish themselves from "Europe" for a matter of old pride, but the matter of fact is they are 100% Europeans and UK is still 100% part of Europe, there's hardly any other country in Europe that is more thoroughly European as Great Britain, in historical context, culture and language.
and the Commonwealth is not a member of the European Union
No $hit, mate! But since all the states members of Commonwealth (with the exception of UK obviously) are not in Europe, that, somewhat, does not surprise me.
I think you might be confusing Europe (as continent) with European Union (as political organization) but, even so, Great Britain still plays a big part in the EEC, although it has not taken up the common Euro currency.
