Why is THIS pretentious?

Why do some people call this movie pretentious? Because it doesn't have a clear narrative or theme? Is it pretentious to want your audience to think for themselves? It has subtlety and a nonlinear story, nothing flashy. Why don't people call movies with huge budgets and a buttload of special FX pretentious? Pretty much that's what hollywood is doing is showing off how much crap they can CGI?

Pretentious is thrown around too much on this site. I do think this movie tries too hard though. I can't quite put my finger on it, I just know it when I see it.

I did hate some of the horrible edits though. I couldn't tell if it was intentional or not, but it came off as amateurish and made the actors look horrible like they couldn't complete a scene or something.

I disagree with your opinion of the editing. To me it seemed absolutely intentional and not a reflection on the actors at all. I think what they were trying to represent in the edits was looking at the interviews from a scholarly perspective.
Naturally, her thesis paper would not cover every word spoken by every interviewed man. So she takes parts and portions from what they say to support whatever idea she is advancing at the moment. In that sense, it is logical to "cut & paste" their interviews, and I think the director was going for that idea. Whether or not he achieved it, and whether or not it was a worthwhile device, are of course subject to opinion.

The characters dialogue doesn't sound realistic; just forced quirkiness trying to sound clever.
