Nervous habit?

I am still wondering what Sean Marquette's character Mod was doing with his fingers most of the movie. He would repeatedly shake his hand and cause his fingers to smack together - but I don't understand why he does this. It doesnt seem like this would accomplish anything. I am guessing its a nervous habit, but I still am not getting why that particular motion would provide any relief anxiety or otherwise.
Does anyone do this themselves or know someone who does (and why)?

This is really bugging me.

This is correct.

Kids would make it a habit for any reason, even kids that didn't do dip wanted to know how to do it and eventually it becomes a habit from practicing randomly then when you get it down you continue to do it out of habit.

Kids will see each other in the hall way and nod their head at their friend and do the "packing dip" motion as he said and theyd either say no or give them a "lip".

We did it all the time in high school since you can't smoke in school any more, most kids only do it in school not outside school.

But yeah, it can become a habit if you have emotional tendencies like anxiety and whenever that emotion surfaces you might end up using a normal hand gesture you use n *beep*
