why this movie didn't work

1. not everyone in high school gets drunk on beer and high on marijuana. i mean, this movie made all of the different characters idiots who just wanted to get drunk and high, even the 14 year old sister! the supposedly straight-laced, responsible valedictorian whos babysitting three kids even gets high on shrooms. i went to a pretty typical high school in southern california and it was not like this. sure there were kids who did this stuff, but not that many.

2. when girls pull up to guys in a car and tell them they just finished middle school, guys dont get turned on. first off, the girls would most likely lie and say they are 15-16. second, high school guys would NOT go after girls fresh out of middle school.

3. having the kid who played zero as the tough guy was just laughable.

4. apparently guys who are sh*tfaced drunk and high can effortlessly beat up on guys and make it look fun.

5. WHY THE HELL did that 'gangsta" just show up outta nowhere during the fight? what was the purpose of that?

6. having a guy who is almost 30 play a high school student. could they not find a decent black actor who is 15-20 years old?

7. the whole lucy-dylan thing was so stupid. what kind of girl cheats with her best friends *beep* boyfriend? of the million ways of getting them to break up she whores herself out to him?? but then again, she was dating probably the biggest idiot in the movie for what, 3 years??? lol wow.

8. normally most of this stuff would pass since thats what most stupid high school movies are about, but this one tries extra hard to be 'real' and it just didn't work.

9. i will say tho the best thing about this movie was eddie. the actor who played him did a great job.

I knew her before you, loved her before you, only I'm not as lucky as you...

I agree, movie is basically ok, it has ok story but somehow without a point. I mean while I did enjoy watching it, there is no story to back it up, looks like one day without end. I think that worst thing in this movie is making everybody junky/whore/idiot ... it simply doesn't work like that. Sure, I would really like to see somebody getting alcohol just like that, get high without parents suspecting anything for anybody and ... never mind, long story short, movie is ok but tries too hard to be something else

It tries to be a Dazed and Confused knock-off.

There's your first problem. This movie is set in Wilmington, NC and as someone who spent their last 3 years of high school in NC I can attest that there is a LOT of drug, especially marijuana, use. In Southern California, I'm pretty sure there is more stuff to do. In North Carolina, dependent on what part you live in, there is pretty much nothing but drugs, alcohol, sex and parties.

high school guys would NOT go after girls fresh out of middle school.

Question? When did you graduate high school? Because when I was there guys went after younger girls. Why? Because they're seen as "easier". And what was Alexa Vega? A fast freshman.

I assume you're referring to Wesley Johnathan here? Honestly, have you never seen an older actor play a younger person before? Besides, Wesley pulls it off. He looks the same age, if not younger, than half of the people in their early 20's. If anything, you should be referring to Katrina Begin, who played Sylvia. She is nearly 26 and LOOKS it. The whole time I was wondering to myself "how old is this woman???"

the whole lucy-dylan thing was so stupid. what kind of girl cheats with her best friends *beep* boyfriend?

haha! I'm not even going to touch on high school "relationships". You should be able to answer your own question here.

I dont know about you but my high school experience was pretty much like this. EVERYONE did drugs, drank everything. and the fights, i can remember 2 big ones. and the thing is, i grew up in a upper middle class/ rich area. trust me, most of this happend. the lesbian stuff, the guys who were graduated hanging out with all the seniors, the pot heads, the fights, the best friend trying to break up the boyfriend and her bf.

this movie def. reminded me of HS.

------fair enough. but if thats how high school really is in north carolina, im glad i didnt go to school there. i just wanna add tho that, drugs are probably way more accessible here and high school student do do them, but not everyone does and thats what they made it seem like.

-----i actually went to high school during the same time this movie was set. the only freshman girls that older guys went after were the really hot, developed ones. not ones who looked like alexis vega in this movie. but then again, maybe thats just another regional thing.

-----okay theres no way he looks younger than 25 to me. and its not like his part was a main character or even that he is a "name actor" who would attract a lot of people to watch this movie simply by having his name above the title. and yes im aware this happens all the time, and i hate when they do it. there are so many capable young actors out there, its stupid to me that they continue to cast these adults in teenage roles.

the whole lucy-dylan thing was so stupid. what kind of girl cheats with her best friends *beep* boyfriend?

----ya ur right, a slut. but like someone above said, everyone in this movie was either a slut, idiot, or dope head. i know high school relationships are stupid. i just didnt like how she went after this guy who she thought was a dirtbag just to set her friend free, like she was actually doing something good.

thanks for the thought out reply tho.

agree entirely with your post..i grew up in western ny..nothing to do but party, get drunk, get high, do shrooms, and try and pick up on the younger girls cause they were easier..

this movie nailed it on what life was like for me in highschool and how we partied and obsessed over scoring beer and weed...oh, and i graduated in 2003, so it wasn't that long ago for me to remember..

sure, i guess this movie won't appeal to everyone..but to those of us whose high school lives were composed of partying and hanging with the "cool" kids, then this film nailed it..

reply

I too grew up in WNY and graduated that same year and I totally agree. Every weekend was spent tryin to score liquor or beer and a bag of reefer. Shrooms once in a while. So the drug usage and partying is nothing out of the ordinary too me. Even the over achieving smart girls taking drugs while babysitting reminded me of some people.

Still though, this movie was missing something to really nail the time period. Maybe it's because things have not changed much like they have if you compare nowadays to a movie like dazed and confused but this move felt too current.

That was exactly my issue. I was 13/14 during this time and I remember that era fondly. Nothing felt like 1999 and it just didn't do a good job of getting the vibe of that time down. Maybe it was due to the fact that it wasn't even 10 years from 1999 when the movie was made. If I hadn't known it I would have thought the movie was set in 2007. Furthermore, the movie was poor in so many areas (writing, casting, acting, development). I wanted to like it, but I didn't.

I lived through 1999 and the movie felt nothing like the era to me.

I went to high school in North Carolina and now I live in Wilmington for college...

And in my home town there was nothing, I repeat, nothing to do for fun. And a lot of kids at my school got drunk and high on a regular basis. But, that said, none of my friends did anything even close to that until college. Even now, I think it's safe to say that none of us have ever even thought about getting high.

And my friends from college who have lived in the Wilmington area their entire lives had similar experiences. Some of them got drunk and high, some of them didn't.

There was definitely not much pressure to do any of those things. You either did it or you didn't and nobody really cared either way. No one at my high school thought you were 'uncool' or 'good-goody' if you didn't. They just did not care, as long as you didn't act like you were going to tell on them.

And all that said, there's a ton of stuff to do in Wilmington, so that whole 'there's nothing to do in NC' thing is not exactly a reason to say this film is realistic.

The problem with this film is that it generalizes everyone and assumes that all teenagers need to drink and get high to have fun, when that's not true at all. I'd go out on a limb and say the majority of teenagers can have fun without those things, whether they do those things or not.

Well..I thought I'd put in my two cents.

Some parts were incredibly unrealistic, but actually the way they represented Wilmington, NC was fairly accurate.

1. Drugs - Weed is everywhere here. You go to UNCW and ask anyone for some bud, they can either hook you up in 30 minutes or have some to give you right then and there.
Shrooms though are ridiculously hard to come by, so Stacey's (the cheerleader) jealousy over the other two girls getting some is accurate (also the fact that everyone was talking about it, that actually happens)

2. The parties - this one was fairly realistic. not completely packed and fairly grouped off. the kids in the back smoking. the fact that is looks completely generic is realistic, because that's always the set up. the fact that they went to three different places in one night is pretty much how it goes.

3. School - the teachers were *beep* weird, but the fact that they came in and out is pretty realistic (at least for my school). New Hanover (where it was filmed) is actually pretty rigid about skipping but the other city school there you can pretty much walk around the hallways, leave campus for lunch, or just skip class and leave to see you boyfriend.

All and all, yeah the film wasn't the best. it felt like it took a lot of influence from Dazed and Confused, the new elements they added in were really true to the new generation.
Then again, i graduated in 08, not 99. That's a whole decade of difference.

I'd go blond for Kathryn Prescott

Hey guys, just checking the board here to help me in deciding whether or not to invest my time in this one and I just have to say that I'm pleased to see such civil discourse. It's nice for a change to hear people with differing viewpoints discuss them without being reduced to childish, defensive behavior. Cheers to intelligent, cogent discussion!

That said, the insight provided is much appreciated as well. Being from the class of '96, I am completely out of the loop in terms of what today's younger generation is into, or not, but the drug use and drinking portrayed I would imagine is fairly accurate. I also attended high school in SoCal and my experience was similar. But I do have a close friend who spent his high school years in Tennessee, outside of Nashville and from the way he used to describe it I've always felt that it was fairly typical of the region.

At any rate, just wanted to chime in briefly and thank you for your complimentary insights on the subject! I'll certainly give ...The Daze a chance after reading your posts.

I agree with your post, especially number 3. I feel bad for the actor because I couldn't get pass the fact that Zero was trying to be the tough guy and managed to get to really hot girls.

I graduated in 2000 and my junior year wasn't that far off from this.

Strangely, the biggest party I went to back then was a friend's 18th birthday party. Tons of people that had already graduated were there, my friend's parents didn't care at all that we practically hot boxed their entire basement and were chugging 151. The only thing that didn't happen from my recollection was sex, but if it did happen, I was too drunk and high to notice. His parents, as crazy as it may sound, did get him a stripper, but she only stripped down to her underwear.

It was a surprise party, so his parents asked a few of us to get him away from the house so we took him into DC (we lived in Maryland not far outside the city) and bought stuff to make a bong (pvc pipes, rubber cement, etc).

That being said, I still thought the movie was kind of dumb. Especially the gangster wannabe showing up out of nowhere. It could've been decent but I felt it was just poorly written.
