a similar movie of few years ago: help me find out

I've seen a very funny movie few years ago, in which a man is very proud of the house he has just bought, but soon finds out the house has many problems. During Christmas time he decides to have it "very decorated", and puts some Christmas lights on it. But the following day he notices that his neighbour has his house more decorated (I remember a Santa Claus with his reindeers all made with Christmas lights). So the guy goes back to his house and decorates its more etc. with some funny incidents occuring to him.

I have no idea what the title of the movie was nor the actors playing in it. Does someone of you remember this movie?

could it have been "The Money Pit"?

Definitely NOT the Money Pit

Definitely NOT "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation".

Yes, in that movie Clark Griswold had enough lights on his house to be seen from space (metaphorically speaking) and to set off alarms at the power company, but he already had the house for a long time and there was no competition with any neighbours, at least not for house decorations.

To the OP, the movie you're asking about rings a bell, but sorry, I can't think of it.

It might be Christmas with the Kranks with Tim Allen. I was particularly surprised at it, because it's based on a novel by John Grisham... definitely not his usual type of writing. The book is called something else, but this might be the movie you're thinking about...

EDIT:

If not Christmas with the Kranks, might it be Deck the Halls with Matthew Broderick and Danny Devito...?

"Christmas Lights" (2004) A British film with Robson Green. Same plot line.

Huh? Did you see Christmas with the Kranks? Tim Allen definately isn't trying to out do his neihbor at Christmas. He is in fact trying to Skip Christmas. In fact that was the title of the book. "skipping Christmas." the book was very good. the movie not so much. They have the wife character in the movie as though she is mentally retarded.

umm...no?
He was given the keys by his neighbor...who was letting him "borrow" their tree....but the cops...angered by him earlier...thought him to be stealing it.
but yet again...he was not competing with people to decorate his house....in fact...his neighbors helped him decorate the house on time

On Home Improvement every year they had a show where he was trying to outdo his neighbor. And I think he did have a lit up reindeer too.

Had the same story line in that crap, appalling soap: Emmerdale Farm this christmas.
God I hate that soap but the wife forces me to watch it.

Christmas lights' as said earlier we'rent that bad: fat bloke Robson green and fisherman Mark benton. Infact that fat oaf is going to dive 30 metre (100 foot) board soon

Is it Will You Merry Me? A young interfaith couple go visit his family and his Jewish fiancée feels a bit left out because she thinks the family prefers the young man's ex-girlfriend. They end up sharing their traditions in the end. I think the father is trying to outdo a neighbor in the movie.
