SO RACIST

OK, whats the deal with casting a PAKASTANI boy as a Muslim and making it sound like Mauslims are all Pakastanis and Indians, MILLIONS of muslims are WHITE... PALE SKIN COLOUR, OLIVE EYES... And its so ignorant, but by far the nicest portrayal of Muslims in the us, but still so racist. I am so glad that its cancelled...

Why is it racist, when that is part of the show's premise, which is to have a middle-eastern/asian person to play the part of the person who has to fit within a middle American family?

It's such an interesting premise, the family wants to host student/teenager to come over and help their socially awkward. So, they pick a protypical Euro teenager with blonde hair, blue eyes, good looks, and charming (from the photo). So, the mom is all happy to see this thing through as it seems like a great opportunity...

Until, the day this student arrives and it turns out to be a devout Muslim from Pakistan. The family looks as if they got PUNK"D or something.

Also, that's not the only issue the show dealt with ... it was actually one of the more complex shows on TV, it dealt with every thing, from teenage sex, social awkwardness, culture differences, unemployment, and misconceptions.

that was NOT racist. i dont know whether your a muslim or not, but i am and i love this show, one of the reasons is that a muslim was on tv WITHOUT a gun - HOW RARE IS THAT.

I kinda get the OP's point. Most Muslims are not South Asian, but I doubt the show would have worked without a brown-skinned South Asian since it's South Asians who Americans think are "Middle Eastern." If the exchange student were actually Middle Eastern (Turkish or some Arab like Lebanese or Syrian), he would just pass as white and things wouldn't have been as awkward. Same with other Muslims like European Muslims who would just be treated as white people, or East Asian/Southeast Asians who would be considered "Asian." The show wouldn't work.

If that was supposed to be the show's original premise, it was a failure. The character was Pakistani, not Middle Eastern and the actor was a brown-skinned Indian... which is what most Americans stereotype "Muslims" or "Middle Eastern" people to look like so that's why they went through the Pakistani route. If the the character were actually Middle Eastern and they cast an actual ME actor (unlike shows like Lost that cast Indians as ME people), I don't think the show would have been the same.

clearly you are the racist halesgal.

millions of muslims are also black. some are even Chinese

reply

You seem to have issues with a darker person being cast as Muslim. Would you have only been happy had a white skinned person been portrayed? He is only one boy. Not billions of people

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. Most Muslims in the US are black. China has a huge Muslim population. Pretty much Muslims can be any shade under the sun. What's the big deal?

Also, over one sixth of the world's population is either Indian or Pakistani. What's so wrong with having someone who looks like a huge chunk of the human population?

reply

Well if you wanted it more accurate. The show should have had a Muslim planning to blow up an airliner.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

reply

Actually if you really are a muslim, youd realize the shows tells us totally from your perspective. Well i live in Turkey i am a muslim, i dont look a thing like that guy, i have dark blonde hair and white skin. I am gay and most of my friends know it, i am a social alcohol drinker, i go to clubs/bars, well my life is pretty much like any other guy in Europe/America my age. And i am religious as well, i do my daily prayers and stuff too.

Well what i am trying to say is the world isnt how it used to be 50 years ago, now we dont have that huge boundaries, and the cultural religious differences are not that big anymore. Get over those stereotypes.

Though the show is trying to actually portray us that we are not that different after all, it fails at it just by look of Raja, oh come on, who would dress like that in school? Its so out of place.

"Always the years between us, always the years, always the love, always... THE HOURS... "

Clearly, they needed to create a contrast with the family. I don't think it is racist at all. If they brought in a white kid who looked so alike, it wouldn't be as effective...

reply

It's not racist.

I haven't seen millions of asians that are white as a natural white person, their skin is a bit different.

But let me just say, white people aren't white as paint like some ignorants think or calling us "caucasians" which is insulting and incorrect, if they did their homework they'd know what that race is about.

I got no idea why you brought it up, but here's my imo.

reply

Stop nit-picking. How is that racist? Your comment could be called racist because by the same measure there ARE dark skinned muslims as well. I really don't give two hoots what he looks like, I'm just glad there was finally a show that gave a good representation of Muslim kids. It was funny, original and refreshing. So annoying they cancelled it.

reply

I am a white muslim with green eyes and blond hair(bosnian)and do not feel that it was racist that this one was from Pakistan. Besides, how many muslims are white? Majority are arabs, pakistanis, indonesians or turks and are shown in us tv as they are. Simple

reply

I don't understand why it should be such a big deal. He's a Muslim from Pakistan. Pakistan is a Muslim country, it was actually created because the Muslims of India wanted their own land away from the Hindus (or maybe the Hindus wanted them out, not sure which not important to the topic either way.) Having him played by an Indian shouldn't be a big deal either, considering that less than 50 years ago Pakistan was part of India, so his appearance (which is all that really matters, he's an actor, it's not a documentary) would be essentially the same as someone from Pakistan.

By the OP's logic, the idea of showing a character from a Muslim country being a Muslim is racist.

That's not racism.
