Dev Patel as lead?

How awesome!

A great fit. Ramanujan was famous for his eccentric personality.

Imo, Dev Patel may get nominated for the Oscars. But depends on how the story is told and Ramanujam was portrayed. Its a same category to 'Theory of Everything' but a different field of expertise.

Awful casting! Ramanujun was VERY dark! But we all know Hollywood is racist so they can't cast someone as dark as Ramanujun actually was!

Patel's casting has nothing to do with racism and dark skin colour. He was cast because he fits the role and is an internationally known and established actor of Indian origin.
The film has no racist intentions at all. It actually shows some quite ugly racism against Ramanujan by white UK people (including scholars) while he was in UK.
Patel has a slim chance of an Oscar nomination I would say having seen the film.

Uh,excuse me? Dev Patel is brown, so what difference does it make in this case? He's of Indian descent himself, and so is the main character. And,yeah, we all know how racist Hollywood is, but in this case, that's besides the point. That being said, it's nice to hear about him finally getting the lead in another movie. However, I can't help but think that if the lead was white, this movie would be getting a heck of a lot more attention. I never even heard of it until I found out it's going to be playing in Ann Arbor,MI at the Cinetopia Internationsal Film Festival next month. (It's a major film festival that's divided between Detroit and Ann Arbor, with some films playing in both cities or only one or the other.) It will nice to see a period film about a scholar in Britain who's non-white for a change.

First things first: 1. Dev Patel is rather white. 2. His family didn't come from India.

Now, you should check the world map. Consider that India is one of the biggest countries (and second most populated, if not #1 by now) and check that it spans on latitudes from Italy to Nigeria - rather hard to miss the difference between people living in those countries, eh?

Dev Patel is so white he simply can't play a guy from southern India. Have you seen the movie by now, have you seen the part where he's white walking among actual brown-skinned guys, and they're supposed to be from the same village where far travel is forbidden? Embarrassing whitewashing.
