How 'religious' are these movies?

I suppose I'm asking this this question for all 4 of these films, so if you have seen the others, please speak up.

I'm just wondering how frequently this movie, and its predecessors, make references to god/religion. I have nothing against it, it just tends to get a little irritating to me after a while, as I am an atheist. I've read lots of reviews for all four of them and they sound worth checking out.

And please, no religious debate in here. It's just a question.

Thanks

Well, you're definitely not talking about "The Passion of the Christ" or "The Ten Commandments" with these films. The "religious" aspect of it is more interwoven, as it played an integral part of the lives of pioneers. So it's historical and you have to portray that.

In Love Comes Softly, they touch upon the question: How could God allow that (the tragedy to one of the main characters)? There isn't any preaching, just a person's perspective on how he's handled tough times in his life in mostly general terms.

In Love's Long Journey, they do read a small Christmas passage from the Bible. ---But then again, it was Christmas... and even soaps do this annually.

In Love's Enduring Promise, Willie's character just asks what His (God's) enduring promise is. It's a very short dialogue and that's as much "religion" that you will basically get with these films.

I've yet to watch this film, but can write in for you when I do.
Hope that helps.

Thank you very much. :) Exactly what I wanted to know, and it doesn't sound like anything that will bother me.

Had I thought about it last night, a perfect way to ask my question would have been: If the religious aspects of the story were taken out and everything else was left intact, would it still make sense and would it still leave behind a good story? All I really care about is that the story isn't overly reliant on religion to make it work and that it doesn't preach. I've seen movies like that before and I just can't bear to sit through them.

Thanks again.. and no need to update your reply with a review on this particular sequel, I'm sure it will follow basically the same lines as the past films.

I just wanted to stop back by and let you know I watched all 4 of the movies and thought they were great. It did seem that the god talk got progressively more frequent as the series went on, and by the last movie, it went a bit overboard for my taste. I didn't mind so much, though.. I still enjoyed them.

Thanks again for your replies.

Glad to hear you enjoyed them.
... By the way, I sent you a PM some time ago w/some info.

Really? I never got it..

I didn't even know until just now that IMDb had a private message system. I just checked it and it says "This Mail box is empty"

Strange..

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed them. I think these movies do a good job of relating how a Christian family behaves. They are not nuts, but God is a part of their lives, it is who they are. It also gives a good taste of how human and fallible we are. Even those with strong faith still struggle with and rely on that faith when trials are given to them.

I've watched the first two movies and frankly, the religion was tedious. I don't really want to hear the irksome "why bad things happen to good people" schmaltz. Someone said that the preaching gets progressively worse so Im going to stop watching these saccharin sweet movies.

Yeah, they lay the syrup on so heavy that they ruin what could have been pretty good pancakes. It looks like some of the actors are on the verge of bursting out in laughter at some of the cheesy religious dialogue.
