Is Colma: The Musical in theaters yet?

I thought I was one of a select group of people to see the movie but I clicked on the official site and read some link to a weird review and the rubttle said that the movie screened to 800 people in SF. Is that all screenings combined or qwas that in one theater?

reply

800 people was the Kabuki screening for that one night (premiere night). I don't know how many people have seen it since then.

It's supposed to be playing in San Francisco again somewhere, sometime in June, which sucks because I'll be in Oregon until July.

reply

I just saw the website. It's playing at The Roxie on June 24 at 10:30PM.

The movie will be playing on Jul 8 in LA as part of Outfest (www.Outfest.org)

I saw this movie last night (August 6th) at the Fullerton (CA) Film Festival. Apparantely the film does not yet have a distibutor.

reply

It just showed in New York last night. And will show again on Tuesday, 7/18 as part of an Asian film festival.

reply

Then I believe it's going to Hawaii and also the DC film festival.

Just saw Colma in Providence, part of the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Very sparcely attended, but I blame the venue--they showed it at an IMAX theater in the F-ing mall. lame! HP was there, genuinely appreciative of the few ppl who actually paid to get in.
I didn't really know what to expect--just decided on a lark to check it out on the basis of HP Mendoza's name. I like what stuff of his I've heard. The movie is REALLY fun. Indie-rock coming-of-age thing about 3 friends facing the inevitable ennui, frustration, lame jobs, growing apart, etc., of life-after-high-school, BREAKING INTO SONG at every turn! awesome!! Characters are totally true to life and the songs are insanely catchy.
We loved it!

Hope Colma gets a distributor, because I know a ton of people I would personally drag to go see it.

It's playing in the Vancouver International Film Festival, but tonight's the last of three showings here.

reply

It's playing tonight, 8:30pm Friday the 13th, at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. And now I'm going!

(It's also playing this Sunday at 2:30 pm, if anyone reads this in SoCal.)

I should warn you -- he's a Fourierist.

It's currently only being shown at film festivals
since Richard Wong personally financed the entire project himself (about $15,000) i dont think it will be shown in regular theaters unless a major film studio decides to buy the rights to the movie or however they work that out.
they recently came down here to hawaii with the luis vuitton film festival but i missed the only screening.
you can check out their website for more information or to buy the soundtrack, and maybe one day even the movie

COLMA: THE MUSICAL world premiered at the 2006 San Francisco
International Asian American Film Festival and won the Special Jury
Award. Catchy melodies, thoughtfully funny lyrics, and appealing
teenage protagonists bring South SF’s cemetery town to life in this
highly original musical about… Colma! Three best friends sing, dance
and dream their way through a city where the dead outnumber the living.

The film, directed by Richard Wong and featuring H.P. Mendoza, who
wrote the script and music, went on to become a favorite on the
festival circuit and earned IFP Gotham Award and Independent Spirit
Award nominations.

Missed it at the SFIAAFF? Don't miss the chance to catch what critics
are calling "[a] giddy, unexpected pleasure" (LA Weekly) and "one of
the most entertaining films we've seen in a long time" (SFist).

If you've seen it once, come see the new theatrical version, re-edited
by Oscar winning editor Lisa Fruchtman.

Colma was in theaters this past weekend, and if it went well, it will be this following weekend as well.
