Is it just me?!

Or do alot of the songs sound like Ben Folds Five?!I did feel the comparison to They Might Be Giants...but Ben Folds had to have influenced Mendoza to some extent! Ahh...just caught a whiff of Rocky Horror near the end when he's singing in the field...I watch to many movies..I need a life!!!!LOL...

I kept getting RENT vibes throughout the entire film....

BITE YOUR TONGUE...this film doesn't even come CLOSE to "Rent." I suppose on some level the subject matter is similar--people trying to make the most of their lives in spite of constraints--but the demographics of the casts, the setting, the acting, the musical score are all VASTLY different IMO.

I think they meant the music because that's the vibe I got as well. The subject matter actually is different, as well as the demographics, settings, etc., and in that sense the film is its own. But the music, I felt, must be Rent-wannabe--or certainly Rent inspired. I even sensed a bit of Stephen Schwartz, which is what prompted me to look up something just now under soundtrack listing: I was wondering if that song "One Day" was originally a Stephen Schwartz song (I'm not sure because I actually haven't heard every one of his musicals), the style sounds so similar. And I could swear I heard that non-vocal tune at the very beginning (before the song "Colma Stays") from somewhere.

Oh yeah! The vocals, especially the chorus "ahh''s that come in like in Ben Folds Five's "Missing the War" for sure! And TMBG's harmonies too, anywhere from "Dr. Worm" to their moder kid-stuff. I even got a bit of 50's "Grease" sounds too...

Loved it for what it's worth, especially "Colms stays/Just like rigor mortis"--nice!
