Angel's Transition + Esme's Role in it

I just saw this film & did anyone else notice the transition of Angel from a girl who loved everything fantastically beautiful & bright/sunny into 1 of Esme's dark smudgy paintings when he died? It's almost like she was trying to hold on to Esme, on how he sees the world & himself, & the only way she could do that is to live as 1 of his paintings.
