I haven't read the book so am not sure if they address this there and I was confused.
Is the mistress's baby Angel's? If so, how could a woman who was a kept woman and had a baby out of wedlock then get a husband and have such a nice house when society looked down on those people?
Or did I miss the point entirely and the baby was her new husband's and that is what drove Esme to such a depression?
I didn't read the book but I think it was clear that the baby was Esme's, I mean Angel saw in him a living image of her husband. Also, I think that by the time Angelica had his baby she was already engaged or married to another man, whom Esme sees when he deserts Angel for the last time. He sees a woman and a baby, and then he sees another man, accompanying the lady. This is when he understands that Angelica was seeing another man and that he cannot spend his life now with her and their baby. I have a feeling that having a son was what he ever wanted, and being denied it killed him.
