Spoilery Question

Right I have a question for those who've red the book or seen the film. Er is there any rape in this from the full length trailer you can seen what looks like Angel on the floor saying 'stop' or something like it. I just like to be warned.

reply

Well there isn't any scene like that in the book. And she is saying stop to one character that hopes of buying Paradise from Angel and she tells him to get lost.

Even I was thinking of the ' rape ' scene, I think its when Angel has one fight with Esme and he forces her..............I don't about the rape scene, there isn't one in the book.

I hope I was of some help.

Regarding Esme and Angel's relationship, having both read the book and seen the movie at a public screening three weeks ago, I must admit the chemestry between the two characters works much better on screen than in the book. In Angel/the novel, Esme and Angel's romance gets a little bit boring sometimes. There is much more passion between them in Angel/the movie, thanks to the chemestry between Romola Garai and Michael Fassbender; thanks also to the fact that this passion is treated and filmed in a modern way.

FromPariswithlove can you tell us a bit more about how the film's early screening was reviewed in Paris.

I know Francois Ozon is huge in France and I was wondering if people there are excited about the movie in France or not.

P.s How did Romola Garai fair, she is a very talented actress and I am hoping she will be put on the map is a truly gifted actress after this movie.

Do let us know?

Hello waterlilly85. There was a special early screening of "Angel" at the Grand Rex movie theater in Paris and it was open to the general audience. The reaction, after the screening, was warm and I noticed, that women, for instance, were particularly supportive and very touched by the movie (women around me, at least). I went there with a couple of friends and their reaction was positive. They had not read about the movie before (nor had they read Taylor's book) and told me they liked very much the movie's modern storytelling and Ozon's take on melodrama. Speaking about Ozon, yes, he is huge in France and people go to see his movies on his name's value. Regarding Romola Garai, she is talented indeed and a daring casting choice. Daring because she's not afraid to play a part that is not always likeable and "nice". Angel is a passionate woman and Romola conveys this passion right. I did not know her body of work before and I must admit seeing her in that part made me want to know more about her. As you say, I'm convinced she will be put on the map after ths movie.

Oh thank you FromPariswithlove fot the update.

God knows when the movie is coming out here in the UK. I hope thats soon.

reply

From what you have seen FromPariswithlove do you think the movie is award material. The costumes seem fantastic and so do the set designs and the acting is top notch.......

I know the world of cinema respects Francois Ozon alot and is eagerly waiting for his first english movie, I hope it gets some notice.

reply

From what I've seen, "Angel" really deserves to be successful and the movie marks a kind of milestone in Ozon's career since it's his first "real" english-speaking movie done with quite a french flair and a lot of chutzpah. And, believe me, the combination works. The approach is also very daring since Angel Deverell is not your everyday-kind-of-caracter. She's a very self-centered writer living in her ivory tower, oblivious to other people's needs and worries. She does not "play nice" with her entourage and I liked very much the fact that Ozon neither condamns her nor find her any excuses while depicting her rise-and-fall trajectory. He injects a lot of humor and passion in this "portrait of a lady" and that's what pleased the people who accompanied me to the movie. As you say, I think (and hope) the movie's gonna get a lot of notice and positive articles when it's gonna be released because it deserves it.

Well it didn't win the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival but I hope it does really well world wide. I am soooooo......... excited about this movie.

reply

The movie couldn't possibly win anything at the Berln film festival: it was out of competition and screened after the award cerimony.

reply

In the movie there is a scene in which the husband tries to have sex with Angel as she doesn't want to.

reply

No violent marital rape scene, just a half-hearted refusal for sex.

Yeah, it was rather a disaappointing movie from Ozon. I expected something better.

reply

I don't know what version of the movie you saw but there IS rape in this movie.

He comes home drunk off his arse and horny (after kissing up some tramp at the bar) and tries to touch her while she's writing on her bed. She's pushes him away saying that he reeks of liquor and to get away from her.

I'm sure she new where he was at and so she was pretty angry at him.

After she pushes him away, he gets angry and grabs her then proceeds to dry hump her very unpleasantly and she tells him to stop and screams for him to get off. He then drags her to the floor & forces himself upon her. The entire time she's screaming and crying. His sister comes in and tries to pull him off her but he pushes her away as well. So she picks up his crutch and hits him with it to get him off her. Then she uses it to shove him off and helps a hysterical Angel up and they run to the other side of the bed. He leaves after that and it continues to go down hill from there, for the both of them.

So there you go.
I just saw this a couple of minutes ago on the Sundance Channel.

What you may be referring to Jerry4444 is when he initiated sex after he got home from the war.

reply

This comment really worries me. There are actually people out there who think this scene was merely a half-hearted refusal for sex?

It was most certainly attempted rape. Idk if you live in this century, but being married is no longer a defense to rape.

reply

Watched it last night. Yup, definitely an attempt to rape her when she clearly wasn't having it and he was clearly drunk out of his gourd.
