A totally unsympathetic character...

with no redeeming features at all. I found myself wanting to slap her for most of the film! Thoughts?

Yeah. I can't even bring myself to finish the movie despite the fact that I really like Romola Garai as an actress. I usually love her performances but Angel is the most insufferable protagonist I've ever seen!

I kept on hoping her unfaithful husband would give her a venereal disease. Any one notice she didn't really seem all that unhappy after her husband died until she found out he had been cheating on her. Before that she could pretend he actually loved her but when she realized that wasn't true every thing else she belived became questionable and her little fantasy fell apart.

Hank! I had my pubes shaved. I'm gonna put them under the pillow for the tooth fairy!

How did she not seem unhappy? She gave his eulogy in tears and was wailing at the burial.

reply

So true! Just like when her mother died, she made a show of grief and then lied happily about them to anybody who would listen. I just caught this film the third time on tv, and Angel seems worse with every viewing. First I believed that some of her crying shows were honest, but now I see that through her whole life she was just playing a melodramatic version of herself. The only time I felt sorry for her is when she lost her baby and begged Nora not to tell it to Esmé. The irony is he wouldn't hate her at all, in the contrary - maybe at that point it's the only thing that could bring them closer to each other. If Angel knew her husband better, she could see that.

Well, yes...so what?

My interpretation was that that was what was intended. That was the story. Angel was a self-centered gifted writer. IF you accept that as the storyline, it's a fairly interesting, but dark, tale. I found myself riveted to it. I doubt I'll watch it again...too dark, but not because I found Angel as you describe her.

my god its full of stars

reply

Just watched it and I completely agree. If it were not for Fassbender in it, I wouldn't have watched 15 minutes of it...

The straw for me was when she was acting all "so what you lost your leg? now you're home and we can all forget about it"... FORGET ABOUT IT? She was a truly despicable character!

You know me, I'm impulsive.
