Why overdubs of Seagals Voice

Why are some of his more recent movies overdubbed with someone elses voice. That is what is so lame. His voice is one of his trademarks. Hope someone knows why cause it bothers me to watch his movies anymore when somebody talks and sounds like a higher voice then in comes Seagals quiet lower voice..

I first posted this over in your question in the other thread, but here's your answer:

Sloppy writing and poor post-production - but the real reason is that North America/UK are not Seagal's main market.

Take, for example, Attack Force. The fact that you didn't hear Seagals real voice until more than 7 minutes into the film was horrible, but that only mattered to the people who are going to buy the English DVD.

Seagal releases his films in many languages and those sales dwarf the sales of the English version.

In the foreign versions (Parisian French, Latin American Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Czech, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish V.O., Russian V.O., etc.) all of the dialog, including Seagal's, is dubbed.

And when you get something that sounds incredibly crappy in English (like Attack Force), it sounds like any normal film once the foreign dialog is added.

Seagal doesn't care about the English speaking market as much as the rest of the world because he doesn't have to. Simple economics.

Wow. Is this theory or do you know that this happened for a fact? I thought North America was always the strongest buyer in the DVD market. It's news to me that the rest of the world now surpasses it in consumption.

reply

Nope. North America is only about 30% of a *theatrical* film's income, and probably around the same for a DVD release... except often a DVD original in the USA gets a theatrical overseas. This is nothing new.

Just a question then, but what language is he actually speaking in ???

reply

Most likely they only have Seagal for a short time. After the movie's shoot, it's not unusual to change different things, and some scenes may need some changing to fit into the movie. Instead of getting Seagal back, they just overdub som of the dialogue.

All in all, it's just really sloppy work. Maybe there's some problems with the dialogue, and it needs to be redone. I wish they could take som extra time on these issues. I don't of anyone who keeps doing this, and with Seagal having a fanbase, they should really do the extra (but small) effort to ensure Seagal's voice is correct.

reply

Every movie uses ADR, because often there is some noise in the background like a wind machine or plane flying over or something, so they need to record the dialogue again.
Seagal is just too lazy or busy to actually come in the studio and record his dialogue again.

One other reason to add to your list: Seagal is making about a half dozen of these films yearly. He is usually on location on some other continent when his previous film is in post production, hence he is unavailable for overdubbing.

Thanks for that info Nosfera Drew. Is that anything to do with Nosferatu? I did wonder like many why Attack Force was dubbed. It's not really on,whatever the reason.I have all his films and that was the first time i remember hearing another voice, but i know in post production the star of the movie has fulfilled his contract, and dubbing is sometimes used in editing, another reason for this eh?

reply

Ohh!!! Im right!!! When I said it, people dont believe me!

reply

You're not the Lucas who used to post at the old Seagal site with film clips are you? Anyway, that is another reason voiceovers are done. It's not on,and should not happen, but it does!

reply

Well, I'm glad that this explanation may be the truth...I considered that he may have gotten throat cancer or something and almost felt bad for laughing at the dubbing...One of the funniest dubs was in "Today You Die" I think where he's on the phone asking for "Paulie Poliopolis, please.." in a mega-sissy-toned voice, while holding the phone like a germaphobe...Any idea why he holds a phone like that (at an angle, way away from his ear, elbow up in the air)? hahaha...

He's too fat and lazy to say his own lines. This isn't a foreign film, he speaks english, WHY dub his friggin voice. pathetic...

reply

You're an ass. His mouth always moves in sync with the words being spoken, therefore it has nothing to do with him being "too fat and lazy" to learn his lines, has it? Obviously the reason must be a technical one, otherwise it wouldn't be done. The dubbed voices lessens the enjoyment of these movies, and surely that is not their desire. I must admit I don't understand any of it, and truly wish it could stop. Sadly, it appears to be the norm lately. I'm still a Seagal fan though, always will be.

reply

He's too fat and lazy to go into the recording studio for ADR so they get someone else to do it.

"Wait a minute, I know what my fortune is, it's partying!"

Steven Seagal-lazy? You have no idea who this man is, like so many who presume to know what they're on about when discussing this man. Everyone who really takes the time to read up on him before giving their "expert" opinion, wonders where he gets the time and energy to do all that he does. He's the most active movie star of all time. And he is a star, and he's actively involved with all kinds of good things. There are so many people all over the world who thank their God for such a man. But as I told some other moron before you, go find out for yourself who Steven Seagal really and just how "lazy" he is. Oh and by the way, I love "Flight of Fury", but then I'm a true fan. He's beautiful and sexy as always.

reply

Thanks guys for the explanations. It sure sucks when somebody is dubbing his voice.
He should care a little more about his fans.Lola if you are a true fan you must have the power to admit that he makes some really bad movies lately including Flight Of Fury. You can't like all his movies because you are a true fan.

reply

I dislike the voice-dubbing, I admit, but until it's explained in detail to me why it's necessary, I won't, can't blame Steven. Also, "Attack Force" appears to be very dark. I've done all I know to brighten it, but somehow it seems to make it worse. So yes, there are those things that lessens the enjoyment of watching the DVD, but I manage to watch without complaining too much, because it's a Steven Seagal movie. And you're not serious about Flight of Fury being a bad movie, are you?

reply

There's dubbing in this one TOO?

Damn. I just bought this today. I can look past it like watching a badly dubbed Kung Fu movie, but the action better be good.
