I wish John Newton had more than one expression.

It seems no matter what the situation, he only has this blank stare. It really took away from my enjoyment of the movie.

I respectfully disagree. He shows many different facial expressions and emotions, for example in the scene at the beginning with the soldiers singing he shows a wry smile at Jonesy and co when they appear with their hats,he shows a tear educing sadness and respect when speaking with Jonesy's fiance, he shows a warm forgiving smile during the diner scene, he shows a playful smile during the pizza and tree selling scenes with faith as well as a shocked surprise look at the end of the movie. There are a few more instances also but I feel the above should make my points sufficiently.

The expression of psychopathic smoldering rage, yes I agree with you.
Oh no! We broke The Emperor's favorite vase playing basketball in the house!

Agreed. The guy acted like a sad kid the entire movie. It was either a horrible acting job or Hallmark's attempt to bring pity to him. He had no personality at all.

Of course he acted sad. He was in town to deliver the news of the death of a friend to his widow, he was also living a life with the Spelmans that he knew he would have to leave eventually. And the biggest thing was the woman he was falling in love with appeared to be just out of reach the entire time and got engaged to someone else. You say he had no personality at all but what about his kindness, his respectfulness, his hard working attitude and his loving nature.
