subtitles in the movie...

Ok, we all know Native Americans didn't speak english. Can't we get over the need for "reality" and subtitles and just have them speak english instead? For anyone watching, it's ASSUMED they are not native english speakers anyway, this is such old school film making. Also, the actual english the natives did speak was blown up to be so broken, it was way over the top. It was distracting.

I enjoyed the fact that they used subtitles and gave some realism to the movie by using the native language. Maybe it will get some Native Americans interested enough to learn their historical language so it doesn't die. How many times have you been in public and you heard people speaking in another language other than American English? I have no problem with that as long as they also can communicate in the native language of the country they are in and the Native American Languages pre-date any other language on this continent. Why shouldn't this also apply in movies in which other languages are spoken but subtitled? We are talking about a culture which pre-dates the Spanish, English and other European and Asian Languages in the United States of America. I am looking forward to other movies in which the Native Americans speak their own languages which are rapidly dying out due to attitudes and disinterest.

Agreed. Anyone too lazy or ADD-addled to not read subtitles ought to go to speed-reading classes, or else read more :-). McMurtry said in an interview that he wanted the Comanche spoken by the Indians, since they wouldn't speak English to one another.'

People in general ought to have some respect for other cultures and languages, particularly when spoken by Indians who were here long before white Europeans set foot on the North American continent. These languages are disappearing all over the world. English isn't the only language spoken on earth, or even the most common.

I liked the Comanche speaking their own language too. In fact, I like WWII movies where the Nazis speak German, not the Kings English.

I totally agree, I hate it when Indians speak the King's English. The native language is lyrical and rythmic and should be used. I also hope the various Indian languages and hertiages are preserved.

I’m with you, it’s just a movie, just speak English, I could care less about Indians speaking there only language, WAY OVER DONE in movies. I have news for all you Indians lovers, lol they were not that interesting back then and they could care less about white people either..
I get a kick out of people who watch movies like this or DWW and go OH WOW I can relate with Indians now, or, oh wow, they are really cool. lol

personally, i dont mind the subtitles. sure, it may be easier to watch at parts if they just spoke english but its cool to go for the reality :)
