Horrid

I just finished episode 2 and its official, its one of the worst made for TV movie mini-series I've ever seen. I'm not even going to bother with part 3. I've never seen the original Lonesome Dove's but I'd heard they were good,so I thought I would start with this one. What a mistake! I've seen episodes of General Hospital with richer characters and more continuity than this thing. And the Val Kilmer character? Good grief, he needs to just go to rehab w/ Amy Winehouse because he was so bad at being screwy that he just annoyed the hell out of me.He must really be hard up for money if he read this character and thought it was a good part. Steve Zahn was the only glimmer of hope in this.It really wasn't the actors,it was the worst script, plot I have ever seen. How this got made into a movie I will never know.

I don't think you and I watched the same series.

reply

I agree with Ashley, it was horrible : boring, very shallow and one-sided.
People have different opinions Cherwhit. You seemed to like Commanche Moon (even if you don't like Adam Beach in SVUor in anything else), that's you opinion, eventhough you don't say why you liked it, but again, that's your choice.

reply

ZZZZZZZZZZZ, Oh I'm sorry, did you say something?

If you thought that "Comanche Moon" was the worst made for tv mini series, then maybe you should see "Into The West." That was the worst one ever. I could go on for hours about how bad "Into The West" was. They couldn't even get their dates and facts right. They placed people at events they weren't even at. From a historical stand point "Comanche Moon" was far fetched on the events. The clothing was well done along with weapons and the use of them. Val Kilmer did an excelent job along with Wes Studi and Steve Zahn. Sure it was slow moving but they did an excelent job at showing the attiudes of the time towards both the Indians and the North. Pretty good job for a three part series.

AGREE! WAS IT ME OR THE ENDING ABSOLUTLY STUPID! I ANTICIPATED THIS SHOW, AND IT TOOK EVERYTHING I HAD TO WATCH IT, AND THE ENDING AS SO FRIGGIN RIDICULOUS.

I expected a little better movie than that after reading the book...they soft-pedaled it too much...I felt that the Scull character should have been more like Theodore Rossevelt, more military-like...they made him a clown...they made Ahumado a Mexican bandit, in the book he was a Mayan Indian...too many politically correct changes were made to the point where it was ridiculous...I guess the book was too raunchy to film, anyway, i.e. cutting off eyelids, skewing people on sharpened trees...still, I thought maybe McM would keep some edge to it...

I admit that it is the weakest of the LD mini-series. Still it was needed for the series to feel complete. The original LONESOME DOVE is still one of the best mini-series I have ever seen (possibly the best). When Deets turns to wave at Newt before he rides away ---the tears start flowing. When Call gives Newt his watch and tries to say something to him, but can't, so he gets in the cart and rides away. Again, so moving. Beautifully acted, written directed. Perfection! After that (as far as quality goes) is STREETS OF LAREDO, Garner does a fine job filling in for Jones as Call. Then comes DEAD MAN'S WALK and finally C. MOON.
How would others rank the films?

reply

I agree the film was needed and it was the weakest on the series... but I still enjoyed it and will purcase a copy on DVD.
Lonesome Dove... was the best
Dead Mans Walk... was the second best
(Return to LD... though not a Larry McM book he did some advising to it)
Streets of Laredo... third
Comanche Moon... bring up the rear

reply

Yeah. It's pretty bad.

Perhaps mediocre would be just as apt.
