If this had taken place in Texas or even Chicago*, the idiot mom wouldn't have brought a kitchen knife to confront an intruder with a knife. At least one of the bad guys had enough sense to bring a gun, but not enough to retain it until his job was done. Of course, if the mom had blown him away, it wouldn't have made for such a "dramatic" ending and it probably wouldn't have made it to Lifetime.

I guess you missed the part when the mother WENT FOR HER GUN in her nightstand (the one she'd confronted Nick with earlier in the movie) but this time, Nick had already taken it (it's with that gun that he shoots/kills his accomplice at the end).
