How did Rhys's wife Martha die? She set the toaster and blew up. What happened?

Her husband was lighting a cigarette on the stove before she walked into the kitchen. She startled him and he left the gas on so that when she turned on the toaster it ignited the gas and blew the house up (with her in it).

I think he was in a hurry. He turned on the first burner and you could hear the elctric igntion clicking but the burner didn't come on. So, he tried a second and the flame came on so he could light up. He must not have turned the first burner all the way off.
