Question about religion?

Confused about the religion of Leyla and her family.

Can anyone enlighten?

reply

They're christian fundamentalists.

Me fail english? That's unpossible!

reply

I thought they were muslims...

reply

Which was probably the point. I think most people assumed that they were muslims until Leyla said that they were christians while talking to the female officer (if that's what she was, can't remember).

Twin Peaks: A nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to die there.

reply

Yes, I agree with you. Also Leyla remarks in that scene with the social worker/officer/lawyer or whatever.. that the most of the people think they are Muslims..
Anyway, for Leyla and her whole family they have chosen actors who look quite a lot like middle-eastern people: what do you think? Which country did they possibly come from? My thoughts went first to Turkey and then to Lebanon.. but I am not sure.
It would be nice if someone were able to tell me the language of the song at the party! In my opinion, it didn't sound Arabic.. Maybe Turkish.. but since I cannot speak these two languages I'd like someone to tell me.
Thanks.. eller tack så mycket (is that correct?)

The question is ironic in that, as elena-rottin points out, Leyla explains to the police that people generally assume that she (her family) are Muslims whereupon she exposes the crucifix she is wearing around her neck. I expect that this is to challenge the assumptions that we, the audience, make also.

I am not sure that her nationality, ethnic background and religion are greatly relevant. Honour killings occur within many countries and by people with different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds as do other crimes related to "honour".

I liked the movie. They are important stories to tell

Laurence,
thank you for your answer :-)
I agree with you that it's not so relevant to know their nationality, but I was just curious about it (so if someone understood it, please post a reply!)
You know, I had it sometimes with other movies too that some details don't appear so clearly to the audience, but are actually well-defined in the director's (or screenwriter's) project/ideas.

My neighbors are Catholic Palestinians and they are as modern as any other Australian family. They have three teenage daughters who wear short skirts and sure do have many guys over their house. What a complete contrast to this Catholic Palestine family. I was shocked to find the family were Christians..how true is this with Catholic familes in Palestine participating in honor killings? I found it unbelievable.

reply

I might be mistaken, but I thought that Leyla said that they were barely Christian. So, perhaps she meant that her family used the religion as an excuse for their atrocities or it didn't factor into their mindset at all. I honestly don't know which one.

Maybe they were just very misogynistic in their attitudes towards women, though the whole 'honour' thing doesn't quite fit with that. I don't know.

Cara Elena, (I go on in english),
It seems, after reading :

that the argument is deliberately left open by Nilsson.
May be the information about the song in the party could give us an answer.
I'm going to ask to some friends of armenian origen, but...

Thank you Eduardo. I realise that I have never replied to your post... Ooops!
Thank you very much for the link to the pdf document: I downloaded it :-)

the track played at the party in the beggining of the film is greek (music at its worse i might add)

however that family is defo not greek since it works the other way around here. from momma to daughter generation to generation the art of manipulating males is communicated to all females as soon as they start generating brain cells. hence the glorious supply of b****es all over the country

i loved this flick

still shocked by those body parts left after that truck...damn
