An Amazing Piece of Film

This movie was amazing! I saw it tonight, just a few hours ago at the VC Film Festival 2007, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for Narrative Picture. It is seldom that we see an action film that carries with it strong political messages. It is even more seldom that we see one so beautifully shot and acted as this one. Johnny Nguyen and Dustin Nguyen are phenomenal, Charlie Nguyen (how many Nguyens were on this film?) bring beauty and wonder to the Vietnam landscape of 1922.
I really hope this movie comes to theaters and I hope it gains the recognition it deserves. This could be the movie that rejuvenates the martial arts community. It is proof that martial arts films are not just about the fights, but also they are about the "reasons" behind those battles. Like a good musical theater piece, where each piece of music pushes the story forward, each of the action sequences in this films is justified. People fight because they need to; either for survival or vengence. The film leaves you with the realization that war is tragic, and that there are no real "winners"
If you get the opportunity to do so, SEE THIS MOVIE!

BTW, anyone who thinks I'm a plant or some kind of ploy to get this film distributed, I challenge you to see this movie and see for yourself. (Besides, the movie in the VC Film Festival that I worked on, BABY, took home the Special Jury Prize, so, we've not nothing to prove. HAH!)

An excellent movie. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys martial arts and is interested in seeing a period piece about French-occupied Vietnam. A very good effort. Johnny Tri Nguyen is amazing martial artist. He did all the action choreography himself. I remember him from Tony Jaa's "The Protector". And it's great to finally see Dustin do some real martial arts as opposed to the tamed parlor stunts he did on 21 Jump Street and VIP. Both Johnny and Dustin are the real deal. Veronica Ngo is great too. Beauty, talented actress and holds her own in the fighting department. A good advertisement for Vietnamese cinema. I hope to see more. 8/10 stars.

I totally agree. This movie freaking rules. It's just too bad that it is totally unappreciated and totally over looked. Normally I don't buy Martial Art movies such as the ones with Jet Li or Jackie Chan, not EVEN for Ong Bak or The Protector. but for this one, since it is poetically driven, directed and made I am most defenitely gonna buy it.
