Bought the DVD yesterday, watched it last night, and I wish I could have seen it on the big screen. Hosoi was actually in Denver last year to host a big screen presentation of the movie, unfortunately I didn't find out about the showing until it was a week too late. The movie is really worth seeing, it's better done than Stoked (the Rise and Fall of Gator), and a lot more enjoyable to watch too.

I don't think it was better than stoked and why does something always have to
be better than something else? I don't get people.. I thought it was pathetic
that Hosoi became a born again Christian, that just proves that he was as stupid
as he acted.

i'm not a skateboarder, but i'm a musician, and i've known a lot of skateboarders, so i can relate to the ethos. i thought it was excellent. i learned a lot, the footage was great, the stories by his friends and associates were powerful. the bond between him and his wife was impressive, esp. considering the several years he did in jail. i'm glad the guy got a happy ending, however he arrived there.

reply

Yeah! I watched it and it was really well done! I give it a 10! Hosoi is my favorite skater of all time! I'm glad he is skating again.

Watched it on NetFlix "Instant Viewing" as a download movie. It was a great movie compared to Dogtown & Z-Boys and Gator. And much more footage to relate to. I know that I had a hammerhead board in the 80's and then a Kaupas board with the higher tail curve for better Ollies. And movies like this make you check out some other skaters from the day like Rodney Mullen on Youtube. It's amazing what he can do with a freestyle board.

I liked "Dogtown and Z-Boys" and "Gator" better. Number one irritation for me was the MTV style editing. They showed the names of the people they were interviewing for like a second and in one scene they managed to cram maybe half a dozen people with names into a ten second space. It was giving me a headache to move my eyes constantly from the lower left corner to the center and back again.

This documentary was probably better suited for people who know more about the scene.

For full disclosure, the fist hour and a half was a doc on skateboarding and not with just Hosoi, but with a lot of skateboarders at his time and the last 10 minutes was a religious movie about Hasoi getting caught transporting drugs and magicaly finding God in jail.

ehhh....nothing special.

I'm actually watching it right now on Showtime Xtreme & I'm not impressed either. I never even heard of the guy till I saw this movie. You totally know there's going to be a bad ending 'cuz he was "living like a rock star" at such a young age & guys like that always piss it all away. Just another story about a kid who threw away all the success he'd 'earned' by overindulging in illegal substances. What happened to all the money he made with Hosoi Skateboards? I thought that was his company - where did it all go? I haven't come to the part where he becomes a born again Christian so I can't say whether that is lame or not but I can see why some people would say that. It's like why didn't he believe in Jesus before he went to jail? Come on, this is from a guy who called himself 'Christ' in his heyday. It's like he deserved all that bad stuff to happen to him in order to wake him up to what was real.

reply

I liked it; but unfortunately it is not an unique story. I did really like "Dogtown & Z-Boys" better though; and sadly Christian's life seems to parallel that of Jay Adams.
I hope he keeps himself clean.

"Why am I here?" "For tea parties!"

notice how christian never admits that he *beep* he goes the "why me?" route. This leads to that painful scene where the director cuts up everything Christian is saying in an attempt to forward the story. They have to use Jeff Grosso (the heroin addicted skater) to explain hitting rock bottom like he was the proxy for Christian... weird.

reply

I totally noticed that too, i think at one point he actually does say " Why me?". I agree with your comment about Jeff Grosso being used as a proxy too.. as a matter of fact it almost made me want to hear his story more than Hosoi's . I also thought the scene, where his Father was asked if he hit the pipe with him, was a bit weird too..

reply

I'd love to see a Grosso documentary. Hell I think there are probably countless people from the skate scene that would be well suited for fascinating docs.

I know you posted this years ago, but I''ll answer anyway.

I bought my first skateboard when I was about 11. I didn't really get into skating that much, just cruised around on it. It was 1988 and skating was hugely popular. Big name skaters were Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero, Steve Caballero, and of course Christian Hosoi. It didn't take too long before I forgot about skating. For a couple years anwyay.

Later, as a 14 year old I became reinterested in it. Many of the familliar names were still around including Christian. For a little while anyway. As was illustrated in the documentary skating completely changed around this time. Hosoi had a new company around then called Milk but he was almost never in the magazines or talked about by other skaters. He was so popular in the 80's and suddenly in '92 he's pretty much forgotten. This documentary really filled in those gaps for me.

Skating was so small during this time I'm surprised no one ever let it slip in an interview what Christian was going through but it never did happen.

Okay I know this is old but I just saw this doc. and loved it. Still would like to see Stoked and I got into this after watching Stacy P's Dogtown and Z-Boys the birth of vert.
