didn't see a rope - and who would have executed her, the movie audience? I think we were to believe she had succumbed to her situation.

I don't think she was executed. That seems like an unusually cruel punishment considering the crime. I think she killed herself, or it was one those typical deaths due to stress/hysteria/etc. I didn't notice the rope when I watched it, but suicide is most likely in that case.
