Just plain SUCKED.

Everything about it from the writing, directing, acting, pacing, tone, on down to the cgi bear. With the exception of Rick Baker's "Wolf Man" design, it all sucked.
All these threads on this board proclaiming it as some underrated masterpiece are a bigger joke than the film.
If this film is "un" anything, it is undeserving of the title of The Wolfman and any connection to the classic Universal monster legacy.

Perhaps, if the film had a 2.9 rating and was compared to the likes of The Asylum's Battledogs, it could be called underrated.

Know what I mean?

Compared to what was done to the Wolf Man in "Van Helsing", this was quite faithful to the original, in some ways better.

reply

I hated it but mostly because they turned Larry's father John Talbot into a villain.

When the Story Lady tells us about the naughty boy who blew up his goldfish.

I actually liked it. The only problems I have with it are

SPOILERS

When he transforms in the asylum and by passes everyone else to get to the psychiatrist.
As the mindless beast that he was he would have attacked the nearest person to him randomly.

When he is on top of Emily Blunt's character and she appeals to his love for her. Again as a mindless beast he would have ripped out her throat without hesitation. No different than any other wild animal which has captured its prey.

He isn't entirely mindless as a werewolf.

reply

Perhaps 'mindless'wasn't the best word to use, but as I understand it, once he transformed into the wolf, his human memories wouldn't be there. So he wouldn't know that he was mad at the psychiatrist. Once he became the beast, anybody was game.

reply

Most of his memories wouldn't be there. However, some of it would remain intact, especially those that conjured feelings of rage. The psychiatrist in question tormented him with "treatments" that were more akin to medieval torture. Think of the werewolf as being the id manifested, without the super ego to restrain and guide Larry's actions. It's like how some people react with booze.

reply

I agree, if you look at what Sir John did to the mother you are correct.

reply

Fully agreed!

The one of the biggest problems with this movie is casting. He may be a good actor but Del Toro is not right to play the part of Larry Talbot, not by a long stretch. I agree it's also a bad idea to have his dad as a villan. There are some good things in the movie. Some of the visuals and Rick Bakers makeup are spectacular. But Chaney's is still my all-time favorite Universal monster movies.
