Painfully underrated.

Great cast (Weavings especially seems to be having tons of fun), great practical monster/gore effects (the CGI is a bit iffy), a good gothic atmosphere and (most importantly) TONS of freaking fun!

Underrated?!?! You gotta be kidding me.

I thought the film was shockingly bad. Del Toro gives a poor, wooden (which is usually the case for him recently - see Che part 1 or 2), and lazy performance. The big draw for the film is a complete let-down, with the werewolf looking terrible with cheap and obvious CGI and...well, myriad other reasons that I can't be bothered to go into as this film is not worth the time I would waste. In fact, why am I even here discussing this terrible movie?

I'll get my coat...

The werewolf looked terrible? I thought he was one of the scariest looking werewolves in a long time. Stick to New Moon and Teen Wolf. They suit you.

Wow, you know you don't need a novel there, Hemmingway. Try an abridged insult next time. Stick to the 50s werewolves as compared to today's? Please, those aren't scary at all. The Werewolf of London looked like Elvis and the original Wolf Man was a joke. A werewolf who simply strangles? Werewolves are meant to destroy their victims. But I know, people like to think that Universal Monsters are supposed to Horror ( I use the term " horror" lightly here because horror is meant to cause tension and dread; something those relics can never do. ) but they simply don't hold up to today's standard. Granted CGI pretty much killed decent transformations, you can't honestly say that you'd prefer The Wolf Man to something like The Howling or An American Werewolf In London. If you do then it's obvious that you are the one who scares easily and needs the Depends. Hell, compared to Lom Channey, JR's werewolf, I'll take an Underworld Lycan over his any day.

You are being too hard on the original Wolf Man movie Mike. Back in the 30s and 40s nobody would've filmed gory and graphic scenes. So what you are saying is merely your preference but it wasn't the preference of people making movies in the 30s and 40s. You want graphic horror movies? Stick to the 70s and 80s.

Green Goblin is great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1L4ZuaVvaw

Its taken me 4 years to finally watch most of this film, and ive heard a lot of lukewarm reviews, but I found it to be pretty good indeed.
Not perfect by any stretch, but jolly enjoyable.

I don't know what happened last night but it was my 9th or 10th time watching this cable and I now think it's a really good horror movie. My heart broke for Lawrence Talbot. Knowing the story I was still rooting for him to somehow live happily ever after. I know it makes no sense. (lol) The fight scene was amazing. I now agree this is truly underrated.

I also find this film underrated, even as a person who is somewhat prejudiced about remakes, especially if the original is good and popular enough. However, this film neither directly copies the original and becomes unnecessary nor does it "betray" the original by turning it into a stupid gorefest. Firstly, I like the Victorian-era idea, it makes the atmosphere more haunting. Then, this film includes very rich analyses on father-son, brother-brother, mother-son, husband-wife relationships and such analyses add up to the tension which is already present in the movie thanks to the werewolf issue. The cast is quite well and the ending is tragically beautiful. By the way, I have seen the extended director's cut and I definitely liked this movie.

Loved this movie. Good tragedy.

Just painful to watch.

If anything it overrated.

Compared to the original 1941 film, which was hugely overrated, it's a lot better.

What I like about this movie is the cinematography and the costumes. They were really done well, along with the location where they shot it. The acting was also well, as the actors in it are great, but the script and dialogs and the CGI were weak, IMO. As you said, the movie had a good gothic atmosphere.
