Do gynecologists test flexibility?

Ok I'm a guy and I was wondering if gyno's really test for flexibility it seemed really inappropriate...

reply

A doctor shoving his hand up a patient's vagina is more than just inappropriate. Doctors will feel for certain things, but not anything like that.

"Did you, did you need to hear their death agonies to know your... your omnipotence?"

reply

Nothing he did was normal or proper.

They never use an entire hand, and a female has to present if it's a male doctor.

---------
Aagh; you're a HEDGE!

reply

Um, no. Another female does not have to present if it's a male doctor.

The doctor in the movie was definitely out of line and not behaving the way an OBGYN should, but there's no requirement for another female to be present just because the doctor is male.

reply

All I know is that every time I've had a male OBGYN, he made a female come into the room at the same time, so legal or not, most of them do it.

---------
Aagh; you're a HEDGE!

reply

The ones you've been to do not count as "most of them". I've been to two male docs and there was never a nurse present, same goes for my friends and sisters. It is not the norm to have a nurse present.

reply

I had a female nurse present in the room the only time I had a male doctor examine my vagina. I was having problems with "bleed through" whilst I was on contraception.

What actually happens depends on the country and the procedures of the particular clinic.

In the UK there's a female member of staff present whenever a male doctor does such an intimate examination UNLESS you as the patient specify otherwise. There's multiple reasons/possibilities for this:

1. Sometimes women feel more comfy with another woman in the room when stuff like this happens. People are instinctively protective of their sexual organs.
2. Protects the doctor against false sexual assault claims. They happen, they wreck careers, and they're expensive.
3. Help if the patient has a panic attack or epileptic fit or has a specific need which requires two people to help with. Some patients just need an extra pair of hands or presence for one reason or another.

When I had my colposcopy and cervical biopsy I had two female medical staff with me. It may have been because the equipment required 2 people, it may have been because I've had panic attacks in the past. It may have even been just to keep me occupied so I don't squirm and thus ruin the imaging and biopsy.

You ALWAYS wear gloves when you do many types of physical examinations in case you come into contact with blood or sexual fluids. Blood and sexual fluids are high risk for carrying disease. Bleeding can be internal and the blood system goes pretty much everywhere around the body, and the vagina constantly creates a "mucus" which can carry disease. Heck, even without the sperm, male ejaculate and pre-cum can carry STDs.

The only times I have had gloveless examinations by doctors was when I've had blood pressure, pulse, and what I like to call "pressure" tests where they press down on an area and you tell them if it hurts. Then again I had no wounds on the areas in question (kidneys in case anyone's wondering). If there were wounds present, they'd wear gloves.

If you're caught even taking blood samples without gloves, you get disciplined and possibly fired.

reply

I was watching that and just cringing and going "AUGH THAT IS NOT OK!" I was watching this movie with my boyfriend and my younger brother and I was trying to get across to them how un-okay that part was, lol, and was like "no no no they don't do that! oh my god not his whole hand! AUUUGH!"

reply

Absolutely not! They never stick their hands up there, they never take their gloves off and there is no such thing as a flexibility test.

reply

You are obviously male. The whole point of an gynecological exam is for them to poke around down there. Now, what he did in the movie was absolutely wrong, but real obgyns certainly "stick their hands up there".
Trust me.

reply

but real obgyns certainly "stick their hands up there"

No waaaaay!

I thought it was completely clear that what he was doing was not medically necessary because I couldn't think of any reason why a gynaecologist would need to insert his hand.

Hold parts open maybe, shine a bright light, insert a speculum - but but "stick their hands up there".

I say again No waaaaaay!

reply

Okay, they certainly do not stick both hands all the way up. But, they do put multiple fingers to find the uterus and check out it's shape and size.
Are you female? Have you ever been to an ob/gyn?

reply

Some great answers here about what is normal at a Gynaecologist appointment including your right to have someone with you or a nurse in the room.

reply

Not sure about that one. And having a right to something is not the same as it automatically happening.

reply

Um, lady, having a nurse in the room IS supposed to automatically happen. Be more helpful and clear in your answers, would you?

reply

I think this varies from country to country and place to place within that country. I have experienced both being offered to have a nurse with me in the room, or not even being asked.

It is being helpful to point out that you may experience differences.

In my first examination, the doctor used two gloved fingers to make sure everything was in order and I was not asked if I wanted a nurse to attend, but he did let me know in advance that I could bring a friend or parent to be with me, so my mom attended me.
I guess that could be why he didn't ask if I also wanted a nurse to attend. I have looked this up a bit and it seems to vary a lot whether you can demand that a nurse be with you or not. It seems more to be a general practice here.

Of course I don't know what the US law says, but the Yahoo Answer was from the UK part of the service too...

reply

How old were you, Kendra?

reply

in my 10 years of going to the ob/gyn i have never had a nurse in the room while my doctor was doing the exam.

reply

Male ones, I think, have to have one though. My female docs seemed to need one to hand her things.

reply

guys can see gynies too, if theres no (uh wats the name 4 a penis doctor) around. Gynies usually train in both areas. Where im from anyway

hey, yoda needs to give some better advice, or yoda needs to shut the *beep* up

reply

WTF is a gynies? I've never heard of a male going to see a gynecologist.

reply

slang 4 gynocoligist. my flatmates mum is one and she calles herself a gynie lol

hey, yoda needs to give some better advice, or yoda needs to shut the *beep* up

reply

Heat dear, you're thinking of a urologist, NOT a GYN.

reply

In the US, gynecologists do not typically treat male urogenital problems.

Also, gynecologists will insert two (gloved) fingers into the vagina in what is known as a bimanual exam and test for "cervical motion tenderness" which typically occurs with pelvic inflammatory disease and other STDs. They also feel for any abnormalities of the ovaries, uterus, abdomen, etc. What this doc did was obviously unprofessional and inappropriate.

As for the chaperone, it is proper form for a male (and even a female) doc to have a chaperone present in the room during the pelvic exam, however, it is not technically required.

reply

No heat, men don't go to women doctors. They go to urologists or andrologists. Gynos ONLY see women.

reply

What is testing for flexibility?? Testing the pelvic floor muscles?? Or maybe how tight her Vajayjay is?? But if that's the case, that has nothing to do with medicine...but it has everything to do with how a "pervert" thinks...I have had 2 kids...OBGYN's who are males, don't always have a female in the room when they check down there...my doctor did though. he didn't take his glove off though or shove his whole hand in there and get all excited and stand up!! That goes back to how perverted the doctor really was. I will say once when I was younger...14 or so, I went to the OBGYN for birth control pills and he wanted to examine me in private and asked for my mother to step out of the room...then he gave me this weird crooked smile...needless to say i didn't let him anywhere near me...ewwwww....

reply

Absolutely not! They never stick their hands up there, they never take their gloves off and there is no such thing as a flexibility test.

Yep. What she said.

In my experience the gynaecologist will have a nurse in the room as standard to protect him / her from litigation. Taking someone in with you is also entirely normal. I think I'd be a little concerned if the doctor preferred to be alone.

Just Male fantasy.

reply

the entire point was that he was sexually assaulting her.

Oh you do arouse the pagan in me!

reply

They also have to have a female assistant in the room, regardless of sex.

reply

Shouldn't the patient always be female?

reply

They also have to have a female assistant in the room, regardless of sex.
assistant in the room, regardless of sex.
the room, regardless of sex.
regardless of sex.
sex.

I wasn't aware that guys went to have their vagina checked out?

reply

They meant regardless of the DOCTOR'S sex, smart-asses.

reply

That's absolutely untrue. Maybe your doc makes a habit of that, but there are no laws saying anything of that sort.

I wish people who've never been to the OB/GYN would stop posting things on here.

reply

Male GYNs HAVE to have female nurses.

reply

NO, they DON'T. I can use big shouty letters too! :D

reply

Your sense of humor would be pleasant if this weren't such a serious subject. Yes, they do; you're seriously outvoted in this fact.

reply

I am really horrified by the number of people who are in any doubt over this issue.

reply

Many of us would have no idea what goes on in an OBGYN office, but I was pretty certain that what he was doing was not according to procedure. It's just that this movie passed the point of reasonable amount of scumbag male characters and waded into "Thelma & Louise" territory. I just found it hard to believe that every male whose path she crossed ended up being a sexual deviant, so I was not 100% convinced that the doctor had crossed the ethical line. It just seemed way too stupid.

I can kill you with my brain.

reply

The females would know what goes on in an OB/GYN office.

1. Doctors do not remove their gloves and place them back without them. It's assault.
2. They are not left alone without a nurse or assistant for legal reasons.
3. There's no such thing as a flexibility test.
4. He crossed the line.

I must warn you, I am very susceptible to flattery.

reply

I thought it was pretty obvious when he asked "how's this?"

reply

I thought it was very obvious when he said, "My goodness...you're tight!"

reply

id stick my hand up there teeth or not, id wear a pair of armored gloves!

reply

I think it's a fair question to ask. I was the same - pretty sure that he was assaulting her, but you know, being a bloke I've never had my vagina checked so I didnt know for sure.

Really now? Fist rape seems a bit "rude"?

reply

the best part of the DVD commentry IMO is "there is no such thing as a flexibility text".

ok, so probably a misquote, but whatever he says is so straightforward. jokes.

*You're not listening to me. There are other things that need to be taken into account here*

I'm not a doctor, but I've worked as a GTA, teaching med students how to examine women. You start with a breast exam, then a pelvic exam and a bilateral exam. We never tested the anus, although this is sometimes done in the gynecologist office. The doctor should explain what is going to happen, then explain as she/he is examining. I saw a lot of things wrong in this scene. Of course, the doctor was a perv, but aside from that, it seems the writer and director didn't even attempt to learn about what goes on in the gyno's office. The doctor should've asked her WHY she was in the office. The patient interview is very important. When she mentioned she thought something was different about her body, he should've inquired. He should've told her to come to the end of the table instead of telling her to scoot down over and over. He should've helped her get used to his touch. You are supposed to tell a woman WHEN and WHERE you're going to touch her and help soften the shock with touching her thigh first- telling her beforehand, that you're going to touch her thigh. There is no flexibility test, but when you insert a finger or two (not four like in the scene), you're feeling for texture and firmness. If the walls don't hold up, or if they resist too much, it could be a sign of a major problem. The "You're tight" line was shocking and I was just waiting for him to get bitten after that! We discourage students from saying "Good!" LOL It could be taken the wrong way.

reply

OMG, The Doctor was a creep and way out of line.

#1. There should've been a female nurse in the room
#2. He should've kept his gloves on.
#3. He had no business sticking his entire hand up there in the first place.

My OB/Gyn is female and she inserted her gloved fingers ONLY and pressed on my stomach a few times but nothing like what that filthy Doctor did.

reply

you make a seriously good point but you also have to remember that 1. its a movie most directors don't care about "professional standpoint" of an issue as a pharmacy tech. i see this a lot in movies as well and 2. he was in fact a perverted person who molested her so he is not going to follow protocol i felt like he was extremely rude the entire time like "assuming" she wanted birth control if someone came to me with a Rx i wouldn't say to a female "oh your picking up birth control?" that is just outrageous and it can and WILL get you fired.

reply

this movie is totally unrealistic. she should've seen a dentist.

(sorry, bad joke, couldn't resist)
