Is this one of those movies that you have to either be a stoner, or have been stoned to enjoy? I did find some parts funny, but i think a lot was lost on me. So opinions?

I think people come into it with the wrong idea. It's supposed to be more of an indie take on the stoner movie so think more Dazed And Confused than Grandma's Boy or H&K.
I've seen this with people who are not smokers they're just Araki fans and they loved it. The only thing ,other than understanding that it isn't a straight up stoner comedy, that may make you enjoy he film better IMO is if you have had experiences eating cannabis or maybe eating too much like Jane because it helps you understand her behavior better.I think honestly very few people have ever had the sort of experience Jane has in the movie and that's why they think it's such a blasphemious portrayal of stoners but I happen to think thoguh obviosuly exaggerated for comedic effect it is quite accurate in portraying anxiety that comes from an unexpected OD especially on oral cannabis experiences.

I'd say Smiley Face only has a couple of standout moments, its content isn't that great. But what it has going for it is, it's the most accurate stoner movie I've ever seen... I've seen all of the supposedly great ones like Dazed and Confused. There are some classic stoner films that are damn good movies. I mean, Grandma's Boy is downright hilarious. But... most of these movies don't really have all that much to do with weed. They just throw a couple of high scenes into a regular 20something oriented movie.

Smiley Face is not like that. I can't personally imagine enjoying the movie without having experience with marijuana. The content of the whole entire movie is based around what it's like to be stoned. It's not just an action/comedy/drama with weed smoking in it like those other films. It's a WEED movie with some aspects of comedy, action and drama in it. She doesn't smoke and then go off and stop being stoned, she's completely baked for the whole movie, and ALL her actions are based on that. If ever there was a movie where the creators decided to just go strictly for making something tanscendental to the 'experienced' folks, this is it.

To people who think this isn't accurate to what stoners are really like... well, I'm sure a lot of different people act in different ways. But Jane's attitude and actions really do represent very well what it can be like to be stoned for a lot of people. The intensity of her high is really strong, almost like she's on acid, but sure as HECK is a lot of weed out there which is indeed that powerful. That's exactly what it's like for a lot of less-experienced users. I know she's supposed to be very experienced in the movie, but some people do claim their tolerance never seems to go up and they keep getting strong effects.

Wow, people are taking this movie very literally. Its just an artist portrayal (not the actress, the writer's) of an exaduratedly high experience. No, you dont hallucinate when you get high...it has just been exadurated for the entertainment value.

If it was to be realistic they wouldn't have needed any sets or multiple cameras, it would have been her sitting on the couch watching TV, laughing, eating, and sleeping the whole time. I bet that would have made everyone happy.

This is not a movie to be taken seriously. The first time I saw this, I was sober and didn't know what the hell was going on because I started watching it in the middle...but I love Anna Faris and thought she was HILARIOUS. BTW, This is the PERFECT movie to watch while on mushrooms.

Fist of all, huge fan of pot. That being said, I first watched this movie straight and still thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Then I showed it to my sister and she was like, "what the hell? this isn't funny?" I think you either love it or you just don't get it.

The second time I watched it I was high and of course, it made it a thousand times even more funnier!

Maybe it's not that you have to be a smoker, but that you at least have to sympathise with stoners or have been around weed or people who smoke to get the movie . . . I don't know, I freakin love it!

First of all, marijuana is mildly hallucinogenic. I was a legal medical marijuana smoker for years in California before I moved to Oklahoma last fall, and let me tell you, this film is only a slight exaggeration of what it's like to be stoned beyond belief. Her thought processes are the same as a person who is extremely high, and having accidentally eaten half a tray of extremely potent cookies and a marijuana feast (pot marinara sauce on pasta), I can tell you straight up that I've had closed eye visuals not unlike a mild mushroom high and short term memory loss (forgetting what I was doing in the middle of doing it sort of thing) for the entire 12 hours before I slept for 2 days (no joke. my roommates thought I was dead). The butter I had made for the cookies could dose a veteran daily stoner with just one cookie. One of my friends, twice my age, said that two had him out of his mind. I ate 12, and 2 plates of food. Ouch.

From the Vaults of Erowid (www.erowid.org):
The primary effects sought by those using cannabis recreationally are euphoria, relaxation, and changes in perception. Effects vary depending on dosage, with effects at low doses including a sense of well-being, mild enhancement of senses (smell, taste, hearing), subtle changes in thought and expression, talkativeness, giggling, increased appreciation of music, increased appetite, and mild closed-eye visuals. At higher doses, sense of time is altered, attention span and memory are frequently affected, and thought processes and mental perception may be significantly altered...

...At overly high doses, the effects are often likened to other psychedelics and panic and dysphoria (bad mood) are common. High doses, especially when taken orally, can sometimes result in difficult experiences and trips to the emergency room in response to racing heart, extreme confusion, short term memory loss, and panic. After high dose experiences, especially among those who are not regular users, after effects can last 1-2 days.

The only things that were really exaggerated were the protagonist's bad luck and frequent poor decision making that eventually land her in the pen. I wandered around all over long beach, and that was after years of smoking more than a gram of medical grade marijuana a day. It's an exaggeration, and a slight one at that, for comedic purposes.

I don't doubt the existence of government marijuana, but I highly doubt they aren't testing the waters themselves or in clinical studies. As far as I know, most of the marijuana from the medical dispensaries in California come from independent growers and co-ops (who are also patients), not from the government. Even if it did come from the government, I know how potent that *beep* is, and it only comes in buds, hash, oils, tinctures, or edibles. You're allowed to see the product and sometimes sample it before you buy it legally, and I've never known anyone to get seeds and stems chopped up in a bag from anyone but street dealers selling brick weed for 40 an ounce. I don't really smoke anymore, since I moved to one of the most conservative (possibly the most weed conservative - anything under a gram can be a felony charge, and a second offense is 1-2 years mandatory prison) states in the U.S., but I can tell that you must not smoke much if you haven't experienced a fifth of what this film portrays.

Oh, and P.S. - I totally agree, Pineapple Express *beep* rules.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but recently got it.

AcousticRiot's post is pretty informative and Erowid is always a good source of information.

Yes, Pineapple Express rules, Grandma's Boy is funny as hell too, but this should be something totally different. Must check it out.

As for the effects of marijuana as a hallucinogen, I've seen it happen, albeit mild and short-lived.

Also, done half a tray of regular aussie bushweed in brownies, which was not too bad so I didn't feel any hallucinogenic effects myself, but that's pretty weak weed.

reply

IMO, you would have to be high to really enjoy it.

reply

for sure dude, totally agree.

I've had some gub'mint weed at the party in long beach, 2 hits and for like 6 hours i was like ohhhhhhh my Gooooood! it was amazing! So i can vouch for you on the potency of it.

I've been a smoker for a number of years and I thought this movie was HILARIOUS. I watched it a number of times sober and high and laughed every time. Anna Faris is an awesome actress and the perfect one for this part. It's about time that they made a female version stoner flick in this male dominated world.

It probably helps to be stoned. Either that, or have the mental capacity of a below averagely intelligent 6 year old. I thought this movie was so bad it hurt. I like Anna Faris, and she doesn't do a bad job here, but how hard is it really to act like a stoner?
I think the last line of the movie should be "it was one hell of a crap movie". I gave it a one...

Is that the reason this movie has such an undeserving low score?

Don't you remember she ate a plate of cupcakes full of pot? imdb.com/title/tt0780608/board/inline/127082257?d=132517861&p=1#13 2517861

I thought this movie was great. Hopefully, it will be considered a classic pot comedy someday. Anna Faris was just superb in this role.

I've never touched a toke in my life and I thought this was a brilliant film. Funny, and Anna Faris put in a very good performance. I may not have ever been stoned but it felt like the film was telling me what it would be like to be stoned, which I could understand. I found it funny as hell too.

The great thing about this movie is that the first time I watched it, I laughed a lot but that was that. The second time I watched it I realized, "Holy s*it, this isn't just funny, it's actually a very well-made film." It's a fun movie to revisit every six months or so...and a little weed doesn't hurt.

The humor was silly and I loved it. You don't have to be a stoner to enjoy the comedy, even if you've heardsomeone under the influence have a grand idea you would find the president garfield bit pretty funny
