Who's Charlie??

Maybe I'm missing something veeery obvious (sorry for that!) but right in the beginning, around 5 min 50 sec in, when Mr. Brooks is trying nor to succumb to his addiction, he's saying 'You've promised Charlie.'

Who's Charlie??

Is Earl a nickname for Charles or something? English is not my mother language. Or maybe Charlie is Marshalls' first name?
