It was maybe a third full in a Friday afternoon showing, and kids liked it. And adults too I guess, some were hanging out afterwards singing...

Saw it at the Burbank 16 theatres for a 2:30 showing, it was packed (mainly families watching as expected) and yea the audience loved it (they loved eddie murphy,Thomas Haden Church, and Yara Shahidi's characther) and they clapped at the end of the film.

Where I went was packed.I dont know how this movie bombed?

"Where I went was packed.I dont know how this movie bombed?"

It was poorly advertised. I saw one trailer for it during UP and that was about a week before it came out. I haven't seen one commercial for it. However, I am no where close to the film's target audience so I'm not really too surprised that I didn't see an advertisement. I do watch enough T.V. and see enough films so that if I didn't see one commercial they definitely weren't advertising enough. Had this film been marketed well, I believe it could have made double or triple what it made this weekend at the box office. Honestly, 5.7 million is embarassingly bad and disappointing for those who produced the film.

thecool1113, you said exactly what I was going to. I took my kids to the movie (12 and 10) and we all enjoyed it immensely. The marketing was horrid, the TV spots were pathetic. No radio pre-screenings either, at least in my market.

This movie had a lot of heart and a great message to parents (especially dads). And how refreshing to see a movie void of CGI that could tell a story.

Very sad to see this movie perform so poorly on its opening weekend. Hopefully, it will find an audience on home video and PPV.

Kudos to the filmmakers (and Eddie Murphy, who I thought was very good) for making a film I was proud to take my family to.

reply

Yeah, the advertising sucked. The first preview i was was before Up, 5 days or so before the movie came out.

reply

It got lit up by The Hangover (which is a bad title in an of itself) project
Imagine - imagination and the Hangover (feeling terrible)

meaning - Murphy has got to get back to pushing the envelope (racy comedy)

but if the dude wants to do family stuff cool.

Why doesnt he collaborate with Dave Chappelle - I know they could really deliver a damn good comedy.

reply

Good point, sljones44. I would hope that he could continue to do family films and succeed with his adult stuff.

I guess we'll see next summer when Beverly Hills Cop IV opens!

I saw it this afternoon (Sunday), the theater was about 1/3 full. People who came in later couldn't get good seats, but there was no problems getting seats at all.

Saw this on Friday night (the 19th) at a 10:20 PM showing.

there was roughly 20 people there. Surprisingly, or truthfully not so surprisingly these days, a good portion of the audience was kids brought by their parents.why they would bring kids to a 10:20 show is beyond me.but then again one doesnt has to pass any sort of IQ test to become a parent.

I dont think the kids enjoyed it to much, a few of them were running around the theater, and they didnt laugh very much, except for the part when Evan has to sing , they seemed to enjoy it then, otherwise they were quiet. when the credits came up at the end the childelss couple behind me clapped. i myself found it decent enough...harmless and kinda fun. i chuckled a few times and my girlfriend seemed to like it as well.

on another post someone said Eddie should start cursing again in movies.i have to agree, maybe do an action type film again a-la 48 hrs. or something.

6/10 for me

Hello marks-44,

I see you have taken my advice and spread your posts around as to not attract supspicion to your shilling of Eddie Murphy movies.

Who are you anyway? You obviously work for Mr. Murphy, or are a friend, or dare I say it; Monsieur Murphy himself.

You only post when an Eddie Murphy movie is released and you say the same things each time. You say you have seen the movie a dozen times and everyone was laughing hysterically.

So here is my second piece of advice to you. Delete your previous posts from your previous shilling job. Like from Meet Dave where you say the same exact things.

I hope you are a friend of Murphy's because if he is paying you; you suck at this. See you when 1000 Words comes out and bombs.

Back in 2009 when I called him out on his shilling, he deleted his account or was removed immediately.
