The Fat American Tourists

It's funny cos it's true.

There's a much longer thread about how their accents betray that they're Brits though.

That's the weakest scene in the movie. By all means make fun of fat Americans but that was just cheap and obvious from someone who is usually more clever than that. When he beats up what he assumes is an American couple and is disappointed to find out that they are Canadian, that's actually funny.

I thought it was hilarious. It shows us that he's grumpy and out-of-sorts (the why comes later) and also that he's kinda mouthy, but funny. Then, when Brendan Gleeson comes down and says the same thing, but in a friendly, helpful way, we get insight into his character and a good illustrative contrast between himself and Colin Farrell. I'll grant you that a "fat American tourist" joke is a little obvious, but the way it plays out was funny and provided a modicum of insight, too.

The call back to the fat Americans later in the movie is hilarious too, when the guard tries to stop Fiennes entering the tower, "An American man collapsed and died up there".
