how did he get the diamonds into the ..?(spoiler)

how did he get the diamonds into the sewer? I missed that part.

reply

He washed them all down the drain of the lavatory in the janitor's closet. I am not sure how that many diamonds could be put in his wastebasket he carried on his cart and how that many could get washed down one drain. Maybe he used a few different lavatories. Anyway, they ended up in the sewer.

reply

thanks! i really don't think it's possible to do so in real life.

reply

Given a hose of large enough diameter, good water pressure, and a city sewer line, it's quite plausible.

reply

The only thing I didn't understand was why did he put the diamonds into the sewer in the first place? Also I didn't quit understand the ending? Please explain it to me thank you.

reply

Well, he wasn't really trying to steal the diamonds, but just make it look that way so they would pay a "ransom". The Ins agency ( a sort of Lloyds of London type Co.) finally paid him the full amount I believe, into a Swiss bank account, which he left to the Laura Quinn character (Demi Moore ). The Diamond Company got all the diamonds back except the one big one, but the Ins. Co. was out several 100 million pounds (more valuabe than dollars). The Ins. guy then committed suicide. He was the guy that refused to pay the ins. to his dying wife. And he was the guy that the janitor was really after.

reply

The diamonds weren't washwed down the lavatory - they went down the plughole in the slops sink - the same place we saw him rinsing the tea out his Thermos flask (the first clue to the audience that he was carrying out a different plan from that which had been agreed with Quinn).

does the film tell us how many times he went back into the vault? did anyone pick that up? Im pretty sure he went in more than once

reply

He went back and forth several times. He even took time out for a sandwich break. To me, that was the most implausible plot point. It would be exhausting work, especially for an old man.

reply

I just watched the movie yesterday, it seemed to me that he only went back and forth once.

reply

The movie didn't show everytime he came and went--they wanted to keep the viewer out of the loop until the end. The video cameras gave him a 15-30 second window, I believe every 2 minutes, so as long as he had a good, accurate watch, he could come and go as much as he wanted all night long. He could go every 10 minutes or 20 minutes, as long as it was "even".

He was pretty lucky that he was able to do it that many times without making being off a few seconds.

exhausting work, especially for an old man. .... he was driven.

How can you guys have missed major parts of the film ie how he got the diamonds out, why he was doing it etc , did you even watch the movie?

reply

Agreed. If you miss those parts, you need to re-watch the film again.
Coming to the board to ask for plot explanations is just tacky.
Not to mention lazy.

reply

He poured them down the sink.

Most likely there is a janitors closet on every level so he doesn't have to use the lift more than once and he doesn't have to pass the security guards more than the normal number of times (once I assume.) If all these things are not so then you are right, it would not have been possible. That's why we have to assume that they are so.
