I have the DVD and I rewatched it. It was not on the back of her earring but above the pearl.
So those were the diamonds on her own earrings. When the earring broke (the stone fell) she wrapped them in her handkerchief. And she kept it in her purse all the time (she has them in the bank after the robbery because we see her and Finch go to the bar where trying to wipe her face she unrolls the handkerchief and the broken earring falls in the sink. If she was smuggling anything she would not carry it all around all the time.
Anyway, she was certainly not the type to smuggle anything (until she found out the would be fired) she was dead loyal to Lon Di (even though they passed her for promotion many times).
As for not wearing diamonds in a diamond house. Well, I guess they overlooked that part to shove the earring part which pushed Laura to her Eurika moment.
Ok,that makes sense. I don't know why this film went under the radar and straight to DVD? It's a good little film.
