There of us watched the movie DVD at home and after the ending, none of us could say exactly how and when Demi stole the big diamond she showed the reporter in the opening and closing scenes. Can someone point to how she did that? Thanks.

Yes she got it from the sewers, but what confused me was the big diamond "south african star" was returned to the firm as a symbolic act. So the diamond she had in the opening scene mustn't have been the south african star. Half of the movie I was wondering how she would get a hold on that one.

The South African Star was not returned as a symbolic act [Hobbs kinda admits this in one of the scenes]
The South African Star was only returned because when Hobbs tried to put it down the sink , it reappeared again in the toilet bowl , so I think he then decided to send it to London Diamond as proof that he wasnt bluffing and that he definitely had there diamonds
And it wasnt the South African Star that was in the opening scene it was just another one of the big diamonds that was in the vault and when Hobbs put it down the drain it landed in the sewers, and thats where she found it
At the start of the movie when Demi takes out the big diamond she says it was 168 carrats , the South African Star/Kimberly4 was 530 carrats , definitely NOT the same diamond

Yeah. He coulnt get the SAS out of the building. So he came up with an alternative.
He put it in a box addressed to his lawyer, and delivered it via some internal mail system.
The secretary probably knew that it was an internal delivery. But, of course, she was out of the loop, so didnt think it important to mention that to anyone.
The lawyer assumed that the box had been delivered from outside (probably the voice on the phone said so).
Whereas everyone else assumed that the lawyer had brought it with him.
I don't get it. She had a diamond already in the scene before, in the toilet that she drops into the sink and retrieves. When she falls in the tunnel she just picks up the diamond that she dropped.
Yeah, that could well be it.
Either way, both me (who you're replying to) and Goodkat (who I was replying to) are saying that it wasnt the South African Star.

The ~1 ct. diamond that Laura dropped in the restroom sink near the end of the film was from her ear ring. The diamond was immediately recovered in the pea trap. The same or similar diamond also fell out at the beginning of the film while she was removing them at her dining room table. The diamond she found in the sewers was 100 times larger and in no way anything that she had dropped.
She got it from Bruce Willis in the divorce settlement. Bruce got the toaster and a some used CD's.
