What Was Laura Looking at in the Restaurant?

In the restaurant scene, Laura looks distractedly at an object (a knife?) under her purse. The camera cuts to the object for a couple of seconds, then we go back to the dialogue. What was Laura looking at, and why? Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to provide the answer.

I don't remember, can you give us more details of the scene? Was she there alone? Or with Finch? Hobbs? The guy who used to have a crush on her?

reply

I believe it was a knife, partially covered by her napkin. It's as if upon hearing the unexpectedly (BACK STABBING?) bad news, she had a momentary impulse to STAB Mr. Reynolds, but restrained herself! Probably to adumbrate that she really was a RUTHLESS sort of character.

Remember, she didn't like the guy in college, and now the one way he could be of use to her blows up in her face, and threatens to close ALL doors in her career field!

All in all, not a very well done "glimpse" scene... bad screenwriting, or bad directing, or bad editing? You decide.

I thought it was because she was about to ask him if he still wanted to go on a date.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

I thought she was fiddling with the silverware because she had intended to take him up on his offer of dinner and a date and she was nervous about it right on the heels of a rejection from his bank. But the quick shot to the knife probably illuminates her fleeting desire (and she was probably embarrassed by it because she moved her hand away from the knife) to in fact kill him for suggesting that it would have to be a clandestine date. (At least I think he said that because the sound is a bit lost there. I can't be bothered viewing the complete script to determine exactly what he said).
Good of you to notice that little detail.

I intend to live forever. So far so good.
