Why did they want to fire Laura?

In all appearances she was trusted and was part of the inner circle at London Di. For example when they found out about the heist, they wanted to keep it a secret but yet she was one of the few people to be told about it.

So why did they want to fire her?

reply

Because she knew about the secret deal with the Russians and wasn't of manger status and they didn't intend to give her the promotion because she was a woman. I think

reply

My guess is that the top guys were already working on the Soviet deal in such a way as she suggested. So she upset them though she hit upon it on her own.
Since the fewer knew the better, she became a liability.

I don't know that it was that they wanted to fire her...she had just hit their glass ceiling.

And the story that her friend/ex-boyfriend was getting when he'd asked to talk to her about a position could have just been their way of keeping anyone from hiring her away from them. Then they'd have all of her hard work and bright ideas for that (low) level of pay for the rest of her career because they'd "ruined" her name in their industry.

Last night, I was lying back looking at the stars and I thought...where the *beep* is my ceiling???

reply

No, because she found that letter in the secretary's desk saying that as of some specific near future date she would no longer be employed at the company.

reply

This is exactly right.

The real irony here is that she was the one who told them to make the secret deal in the first place. Then, when it was set into motion, the Russians insisted that only the upper management knew about it but, because she was a women, she would never get the upper management position. So her own plan turned out to be the start of her downfall.

So she had to be eliminated in a way that would also make certain that she wouldn't go to any other company that London Diamonds did business with...which was virtually every financial industry in the world. This is why they began a program of character assassination. It would completely destroy her and gives a very good reason why she would be bitter enough to go along with the robbery plan. You see, they didn't just try and fire her, the tried to totally ruin her and eliminate any possibility for her ever make a living again.

What really is unexplained is why the Russians let her stay on in the company after the old man had died. Perhaps with the son in charge, he was willing to stick up for her a little (but not enough to give her a promotion).

reply

It could be they kept her on, because after the robbery and the boss dying, they wanted some kind of stability and the plot to get rid of her wasn't at the top of their list at the time.

The last day was to be June 10th. But I don't think we know how many days passed since she found out she would be fired, but I get the impression she was distracted.

The old Russian man liked her. He knew she had a brain. He valued secrecy. And she found the diamonds and helped Lon Di maintain their professional reputation. When they were celebrating he specifically stated that he valued their confidentiality and he looked at her.

When she went for a promotion again she was once again turned down--because she is a woman--and she turned in her resignation the next day.

She likely got the finders fee for the diamonds and that was sufficient to live off of but she received notice of the money from Hobbs.
