A woman of Laura's looks + age CELIBATE in 1960 London? LMAO!!

OK, I know it was to make the point that she was singularly dedicated and focused on work, and giving up so much more than her male colleagues, yadda-yadda, but REALLY now... jazzy, prosperous, post-war London (or NYC or Paris, or anywhere), everyone was shagging everyone! So to portray her living this solitary sexless life, is just HIGH-larious... kind of like several other plot points... hmmmm...

Bloody Hell, luckily it's all just Hollyweird fiction, 'cause otherwise I'd be MORALLY OBLIGATED to travel back in time, to before I was born, AND GIVE HER A VIGOROUS ROGERING! Smoking ciggies not even a problem... picture Demi/Laura bent over, in her stockings, garters, and high-heels, elbows on the window sill, head outdoors, ashes falling in the courtyard, her "girls" swinging up and back in unison, LOL! (That scene wound up on the cutting room floor, I'm guessing... ;^)

You know what, kid?
You haven't got the SUBTLETY to get there!
I knew a woman ( a professional like myself ) very attractive, young, couldn't meet men at all. She joined dating sites and guess what? In 6 months she met a young, attractive surgeon who apparently couldn't find a partner either! On line by the way and now they are married.
I guess those of us who are professional types working for the public good 60 odd and up hours a week; it happens. It's hard to meet SUBTLE (or otherwise) attractive men.
If you jump at a woman with your pecker hanging out; she's likely to call the cops not jump into your arms. Even Demi Moore, even in your dreams.

I intend to live forever. So far so good.

But... the character 'Laura' made it quite clear... several times and in several ways... that SUBTLETY was wasted on her, utterly. Were we watching the same movie, you and I?

I mean sure, a criminal conspirator ('Hobbs') or a male suitor, has to talk the game, and dance the dance, but only for a few minutes, to let the "lady" preserve her illusion of "dignity"... to convince her that "nobody will find out", yadda, yadda... but as soon as all the items are ticked off on the female id checklist (and the infinitely elastic RATIONALIZATIONS are in place), it's GRAND THEFT DIAMONDS time! (Or a boisterous roll in the hay, same game, same neurotransmitters.) Again, there were PLENTY of suave sophisticated gents in the London of that period. Thus celibacy = risible character element.

PS: Hmmm... Young™ + Attractive™ + Surgeon™ = Paperback Romance cover illustration! Ding-ding-ding!

So... your friend, Mrs. Surgeon... she... cheats on him, doesn't she? I mean, no one's REALLY ever "good enough" for her... are they? She... belongs to a gym... and "works out", doesn't she? (See 'hypergamy', 'apex fallacy', and 'Princess Snowflake Syndrome' for details.)

The surgeons are still together; no one is straying, and are very happy - to my best knowledge. Still working 60 hours a week. For the public good.

And Laura did fulfill her goals and dreams by taking the proceeds of the diamond heist and giving it all to the public good or did you miss that brilliant colour photo of her in Africa with an un-named gentleman beside her; one of the few smiling shots of her in the entire movie. She wasn't "shagging" anybody in that shot to my knowledge- she was kneeling beside a young child in Africa. Or did you forget that scene entirely so intent were you on the image (in your mind) of Laura hanging out the window as you come at her from behind. YOU missed the entire point; she found herself by helping others not getting shagged in swinging 60s London.

I intend to live forever. So far so good.

As jazzy, prosperous and free loving as 1960s London may have been, it's not that much of a stretch to assume that a professional woman in a male dominated field like Laura may have had trouble finding a mate. She may well have thought her job would be in jeopardy if she cut herself some slack loosened the reigns and started dating or, heaven forbid got married.

Of the two men who showed interest in her, one of them was married and the other suspected her of committing a serious crime. Also, she was nearly forty. Would a woman of that age and station in life really be off shagging various suitors like a flower child hippie?

And besides, the whole movie takes place over the course of what, a few weeks? Beginning with the Russian-South African crisis and ending with the theft of the diamonds (which she took part in). With all that going on, perhaps Laura wasn't exactly in the mood for a shag. We don't know her whole life's story, maybe she had someone she occasional called up for a booty call prior to these events. We don't know she was celibate, just that she didn't have sex during the timeframe of the movie.

Well we don´t know if she is screwing around or not. She maybe on a break. She could also be Asexual or homosexual. It´s not like the film follows her all the time, weekends she may dress up in a blond wig and shag 20 somethings all night long.

1960 might sound like "the sixties" to you, but it was still the fifties, both chronologically and socially. The sixties didn't become "the sixties" until the birth control pill was in widespread distribution. Really the sixties as in the swinging sixties didn't really begin until 1963. As for looks, well that's never really important as outside of the movies you'd be surprised what ugly people get up to.

Not everyone in a certain time has to have the stereotypical characteristics of the era. Just look at her, a professional woman in a male-dominated world, she already broke a common trait of the time. Everyone wasn't shagging everyone else. It wouldn't be fair if someone from the future looked back on our current time and assumed that every single person in the 2010s was a conceited social-network addict. Anyway, the year 1960 was pretty much an extension of the 1950s. The moniker with its connotation of "The Sixties" that you are talking about didn't happen for a few more years.
