Robbing Scene

Overall i liked the movie, but the robbing scene was so cliché and you could see it coming from a 1000 miles...

Also, i think it was totally unnecesary.

What do you think?

reply

I'm gonna bite, I feel generous.

The reason why the scene was there, was to justify the heart-attack later. Frank ran out of drugs. Instead of three pills, he had two. Epiphany followed.

Also, it wasn't cliché, he beat the kid up. I expected him to loose all of his money, cards, everything, leaving him begging for his kids to come pick him up.

Didn't happen. Moderate robbing, story progess. Move along, please.

Important scene as the druggie hobo essentially represented the "wrath of his dead druggie son's soul" being the impetus to enact the change in Frank's life.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

It was there for a few reasons, so I don't see how anyone can call this scene meaningless. It shows Frank's character and his overcautiousness for his children when he sees this kid and asks him if he's alright. I though when he asked him "if I give you some money will you buy some food?" that was just so.. is cute the right word? But it speaks to his character.

And as Dances With Smurfs said, it also represents his druggie son.

Also, the lack of medicine leads into the heart attack scene. We clearly know from the beginning that he shouldn't be getting on planes as it is, coupled with not having his medicine as well as the storm to provide even more to it, it all leads to him having the attack. I gotta be honest, for a minute there I thought Frank's character was going to die after that scene, so yes, the robbing scene was necessary.

Oh this scene almost broke my heart. It was hard to watch. That hobo was just so heartless. And then when they show Frank calling his home number and hearing his wife's voice :(

(sorry for the delay replying)

are you kidding? It was part of the plot. It's like saying the nude painting scene in Titanic wasn't necessary cos it didn't involve the sinking of the ship

No expectations, no disappointments.

reply

It was very predictable and really, he could have just had a heart attack. We wouldn't have needed that dramatic scene to set up how he was running out of medicine. He was old and obviously a little burnt out, so, no one would have questioned it.

reply

It was foreshadowing of his drug addicted son. It helps us see the desperation of addicts. It also moved the plot forward with his medication being destroyed.

Something similar happened to me years ago so I found it realistic as well.
